Folks seriously overrate fiala. How are people arguing that Fiala is “more proven” than Thomas and Kyrou?
Fiala just had his first PPG season at age 25. Thomas did that at 22 and Kyrou at 23.
Fiala is just older. I don’t see how he’s any better than either one. In fact I’d never trade either one straight up for him.

I don’t terribly mind trade for la, but that contract sure seems like huge overpayment for complementary player.I think both teams did well in the trade, Kings got a good player to help improve, Wild got a 1st and good prospect. Fiala's contract is a lot and I think he'll return fine value on it, but it's certainly not a team friendly deal by any means.
He was a 65-70 point pace player in the 2 seasons before this prior one, and this past one he was just over a ppg, so it's a fair enough deal for his past 3 seasons. Especially for a team that has the space and needs some sort of an impact player.I don’t terribly mind trade for la, but that contract sure seems like huge overpayment for complementary player.
They've also had a year or so to prep themselves for this eventual trade, and they did well enough on the return. They'll be fine since he wasn't their best winger and they have young guys like Boldy and Rossi. It wouldn't be that different from if we traded Tarasenko for a good return. Not saying the players are similar, just that the teams can handle the loss. After reading some Wild fan's thoughts - they didn't exactly love Fiala. They could tell he was a gamebreaker, with excellent finishing ability - but he could also go through long droughts (Then again, what scorer doesn't), and he was pretty careless with the puck. Sounds a lot like Kyrou to be honest.
Yes and yes. In a relatively short period, the Blues have developed a solid organizational tree. Not bad for an Original Expansion team.I've assumed we were going to lose Montgomery or Ott and we'll eventually lose Ott in the next few years. Assistant coaches getting head coaching jobs through your team is good for being a good spot to land the next set of good assistants though. Whether that's a younger guy with potential like Ott, or a former head coach or current top assistant somewhere else.
My hope was that 1 of our assistants got head job this summer (they deserve it and I'm happy for them) and we kept other 2 for at least 1 more year. That allows us to only have to hire 1 at a time and preserve some continuity, while also seeing guys get rewarded and showing appeal of jobs on our staff. Assuming Boston makes Monty official, unless Jets hire Ott will get my wish.Montgomery was great here but we were giving him this chance specifically to reinvent himself as a head coach.
It's something we didn't have to do - we already had our assistants in place - but we did. Huge props to the Blues' organization for letting Montgomery prove himself again and I'm sure he's thankful.
Keeping Ott, in my opinion, is a bigger win as of now.
Their bigger problem is their GM search has taken forever. A week or so from draft and FA they still don't know who will be calling shots. Presumably they wanted to let GM pick coach and none of their finalists for GM position wanted to keep Boughner so that is why they fired him now. But it's a crappy look. The timing of the Sharks firing their staff was pretty shitty. Those guys could have competed for one of the many open spots. Instead, they miss that opportunity (and the Sharks miss out on lots of quality coaches who were already hired). I don’t care if they suck, but that move smells like a meddling owner.
The defensive forward play from the Blues deserves a lot of credit here.Fiala was a total ghost in their playoffs. Was he hurt or did blues AHL d core in that series completely smother him?
I expect him to produce for LA in the playoffs next season. He’s a late bloomer.Fiala really hasn’t ever produced much in the playoffs. Don’t think it’s really because of what the Blues did.
