He's got a lot of history with STL, so, maybe that was part of it

Coaches want to be comfortable these days
He was assistant to Berube (2 seasons) and he signed with the Blues as an undrafted free agent out of College as a player, he has deep ties to the Blues. That still doesn't mean he wouldn't have taken the Penguins job if the Penguins fired Sullivan.

It just means the Penguins f***ed up royally in two ways.

1. Blues were always looking to fire Bannister if a better coach became available, that was clear. So it could have easily been Mike Sullivan they fire Bannister for.
2. Penguins will never find a coach of that caliber readily available ever again because of their ignorant ties to Sullivan.

Also, it's clear not a lot of GM's think that highly of Jay Woodcroft.

Ottawa has way too much talent to be this f***ing bad year after year. What a weird team.
How do you tell your Captain that hey we're gonna be a contender now that we have good ownership and we want to make this work. Then turn around and trade for a Ullmark only to also trade Chychrun for a shitty return before the season even started and not even use him to get in a good position during the season and then move him for a better haul at the TDL or maybe he even wants to stay by then.

What a f***ing fail by Staios. He royally f***ed that whole thing up.

To trade a top pairing Defenseman for....Nick Jensen and a 3rd round pick? That should get a GM fired the next day.

Hamonic also flat out sucks and then they add a loser like Cousins, what a terrible off season by Staios, he wanted to turn them into a contender and then did some very bizarre trade to lose a top defenseman and filled it with shitty depth.

I don't have a great place to put this, so I'll try here. Over on the History of Hockey forum, we're running a project where we try to rank the top goaltenders of all time. This means comparing and contrasting goaltenders from all eras of hockey, from all teams, from all leagues. It's obviously very difficult to do this as there's so much context that needs to be accounted for, which is why we do it - it's fun and we learn about history.

That's why I'm here, for context on one Marc-Andre Fleury, who's currently up for voting! Anything you Penguins fans can offer about him is wanted in the voting thread right here. Anything you got: stats, memories, anecdotes, it's all good. Or, if you just want to drop in and read the discussion, of which there's plenty from previous voting rounds, that's welcome too. Thanks!

He's a goalie the team sabotaged because they were so cheap they tried to avoid playing him too much as a rookie so as not to pay him the rookie bonus.

Also didn't give him a proper goalie coach for years, his first proper goalie coach probably didn't come until a few years before he got dealt to Vegas, Mike Bales.

Meloche was awful and his tenure was more sporadic, didn't really do jack shit.

Incredibly athletic, does a lot in the community but doesn't advertise it or likes it to be advertised, prankster, had his moments that required a sports psychologist but goalies that start in his situation never succeed let alone end up with a career with 3 cups, a vezina, Jennings, 5x Allstar, Olympics Gold (3rd goalie but hey he was still on the team), and 2nd all time for wins as a goalie (14 more wins than Roy in 1 more game - 1,030 to 1,029).

A lot here still hate him for some bizarre reason, but Fleury is still hugely popular with Pens fans and the biggest crowd this team has had at PPG arena the last few years is the game that would be Fleury's last in Pittsburgh as a part of the Minnesota Wild. Fleury had his ups and downs but personally, I'll always love the bloke. He's an absolute class act.

I mean, you can look at his stats

... Then look at his gaffe reels on YouTube

He's good.. But snakebitten

Without him, we likely fail even more... But MAF is frustrating, too

I dunno who is on the list, but he's like... No lower than 20 out of 100
