Around the NHL: Congrats Hawks on winning the STANLEY CUP

Pens fans unnaturally thrilled... 1 cup since the lockout with the wunderkid twins, one of which they earned. They've been irrelevant for quite some time.

So apparently becoming the second highest player in the league (barely) is a discount

Toronto would've given Malkin $11M+ for 7 years, $9.5M is a discount. He is making significantly less than Crosby makes over the first 8 years of his deal.

“@NYP_Brooksie: Malkin has set the bar for Lundqvist.”

Different positions with different markets. A goalie won't make $9M+ in this league unless the cap goes up over $80M.

that is some serious money for Malkin. I hope it handcuffs the Pens a little in the later years of the contract.

They risk losing both Letang and Dupuis unless they lock up one of them before free agency.

Letang is allegedly asking for $7M+ which the Pens hardly can afford. Dupuis should command $5M+ which they will have a hard time affording. If they focus on getting Letang down to a level they can afford, Dupuis will likely bolt on July 5th, and Letang will probably have to be traded anyway. Then the Patrick division rejoices!

That rules out the Pens from competing for a Cup for the next few years.

I think if they can get rid of Fleury and get a solid goalie and a 2nd pair dman when eventually trading him and Kunitz, they could still compete. Dupuis however, should be concerning to them. He's vital to their PK and he's getting up there in age. Call me crazy, even with Malkin and Crosby on that team, I think it ultimately depends on how long Dupuis can keep it up. He won't be replaced easily.

I don't see how they can afford keeping Dupuis TBH. Even if they sign him for a discounted $4.5M/y deal (should be at least 4 years in length for him to accept that) and buy out Fleury they have $32.7M locked up in 5 players with Letang still unsigned.

If they get Letang signed to a $7M contract, that is $39.7M in 6 players with no goalie. They will practically have to fill their lineup with AHL callups to make it in under the cap.

different situations but if malkin was making 10.5m+ then henke would have a lot more leverage to be on the higher side in negotiations.

Didn't think of it that way, good point. I thought Brooksie was saying Hank will demand the same deal or walk, which is ludicrous.

If Malkin's contract makes Hank's contract cheaper; thanks for leaving money on the table Evgeni!

I think the Bruins have met the type of team that can beat them. The Leafs were a much lesser version, but they had some success and came pretty close.

I read a lot of opinions about how the Bruins took off after the 1st round series, and just found themselves, gelled, and got better, like they had stared death in the face and got scared straight.

Another way of looking at it is that no team after the Leafs challenged them with pressure and skill, until the Blackhawks now. We all believe what we believe, and this is what I believe.

Sure, Penguins have no skill.

Gotta wonder if Brooks actually believes in what he says or if he's just stirring the pot.

The market for Lundqvist was set by Pekke Rinne (7/49). Another comparable is Jon Quick (10/58) but his contract violates the terms of the new CBA both in term and variance.

Quick was a RFA hen he signed his deal as well IIRC.

I'm guessing Hank will sign for $7-7.5M/year.

Brooks is such an idiot, Torts was right about that...

I tweeted Brooks back saying Quick set the bar, but I didn't know about his contract violating the new terms.

Hank doesn't want to break the bank, just the respect he deserves. He's a team guy, will not go for the money grab, not in his nature, plus, he loves NYC, a place unlike any other.

League source on our #Flyers story re: Bryzgalov "he's disliked by many" of his teammates. "They don't want to play for him or with him."

wow

Is it just me or is a LOT of the Bryz hate unwarranted?

Sure, he isn't an all-star goalie but there is other problems with the Flyers
