@Randy Butternubs @Captain Hook its just mind boggling to give someone that kind of contract after only playing 77 games into their career. With this deal they’re obviously going to let Chychrun walk into UFA because there’s zero chance a team is going to pay 3 defenseman 8mil + a year.

Sens are banking on the potential. In 2 years that team could be stacked, signed long term and signed cheap. In a cap world you gotta take some risks.

Crazy to get that kind of contract after proving so little. He's only played one NHL season, scored 32 points in that season and now gets a huge money extension.

He would have only been RFA next year too. Why not see how this season goes, how he develops etc. before marrying yourself to this kind of huge long-term money commitment. Reeks of desperation by the Sens. They got burned by DeBrincat refusing to sign there and are probably desperate to make sure they lock up their other players. I can see why they want to keep Sanderson around. They invested a top 5 pick in him and seem to believe he'll grow into being worth this contract. Pretty big gamble though.

I don't know how good Sanderson is to get a gage on how much he's worth but seems like a big and uncessary gamble. Given Chabot and Chychrun are both on the team and are going to chew up plenty of minutes it isn't like Sanderson was going to end up having a huge breakout offensively so I don't see why they couldn't have waited a year and still got him for similar money even with potential cap rises.

The Sens are at the point where they need a coach who can take them to the next level. As others have pointed out, they have enough talent.

Yeah.

Up front, I didn't pay much attention to the NHL this past season but that contract could be devastating. Luckily for the Sens, that buyout ratio could only be at 1/3.

Unless he's significantly better than Makar at defense then all the stats I'm seeing say that Sanderson should only be getting something like $5.5M.

It's a risk. That's all I know for sure.

For Pens fans: the latest I'm reading on him is a better Dumoulin/Pettersson mix with a better wrister. Is that worth an 8.7% cap hit at some point in the near future?
8.7%, Crosby would argue yes!

Just watched Friedman and Marek interview Pierre Engvall, where they referred to Brock Nelson as underrated. Nelson is as properly rated as it gets.

In yet another example of this country being way too small, I just found out one of my usual sparring partners at judo is Lukáš Dostál's cousin.

Babcock, Torts, all those "old school coaches" are out of touch with reality.

Sully might be stale, but I don't think he's violating players privacy like that haha.

Biz response: "Tell Babs to knock off the bullshit. Enough with putting guys on the spot in the coaches room asking them to link their phones up to airplay mode and grilling them. I’ve had tons of players confirm it. Smarten the f*** up Babs. Shove your statement up his ass."

:laugh::laugh::laugh:

Babcock needs to have more self-awareness. Rightly or wrongly, everything is going to "blown out of proportion" moving forward. He's the employee who knows (or should know) anything could get him dismissed. Basically, he has to be all professional - all the time.

NHL and NHLPA investigated this and found nothing. Just Babs asking players about their familys. Hes been an idiot in the past, but there is nothing wrong with this.

If my boss asked me to do that, I would probably have some reservations, especially if we don’t have a long and pleasant relationship.

"Hey lemme see your phone to see what kinda person is gonna captain my hockey team."

There's no way to spin that as not creep behavior, which in Babcock's case, is a colossal upgrade from "massive piece of shit human being" behavior. So, progress, I guess.

It is wild how many people let their boss go through their phone and publicly broadcast the photos to other people, apparently.

Babcock digging through Johnny Hockey's trash for clues like an ordinary crazy person, and definitely not in a perverted creepy way.

If I were to do this with my students, I would be instantly fired. It's creepy as shit.

I hate going to defense for Babcock, but I actually read an article about this tactic recently. The premise is basically "what in your life is important to you and would you be willing to share with everyone?"

It's a team building tactic that has proven to be effective in understanding co-workers/teams better in hopes of building connections as a human being.

And there is a bit of a difference between a teacher/student vs player/coach. I'm not sure that's the appropriate analogy here.

Yeah, I have way more checks and balances on my job and public scrutiny than a washed up NHL coach, that's for sure.

Let's assume the best for Babcock and that while a poor choice, it's been done entirely innocently. It's still dumb as shit. It's a guy who has the ability to destroy your career forcing you do to something publicly for some absolute bullshit pop psychology he vaguely remembers from an article he skimmed at the dentist. And for what? What earthly good does it bring to the team or to the game?Like why not just ask players to do show and tell or bring a mood board or even just talk about their feelings?

Like anything, "it depends". Some people react positively to learning more/deeper about their colleagues and others couldn't care less. Babcock can go take a long walk off a short pier, but I at least commend him for trying a different approach with his previous style.
