Athletes like Ovechkin who are actively involved in supporting politicians probably shouldn't escape scrutiny under the guise of being an athlete and not a politician. As far as anyone should care they've invited those questions.

I don't think local Jets media should go looking for a story though.

Edit: I made this comment before reading Ovechkin's statement, he actually hid behind "I'm just an athlete."

As long as Ovi has a picture of him and his best bud Putin as his Instagram picture, he should not be allowed to duck any questions about Russia / Ukraine / Putin. Keep pushing him. If you want to claim to be just an athlete and offer no comment, then get the picture of Putin off of your social media at a minimum.

Wow, just checked his Instagram because I couldn’t believe he would leave that picture as his profile picture.

Supporter or not, you’d think at the very least someone in Washington’s PR department would tell him he should remove the picture, at least for now (and probably indefinitely).

It's really not going to age well regardless of how the "conflict" is going.
(Using the word "conflict" as I don't want to get flagged for political posting)
At this point anyone that currently supports the 5'7 man hiding in his fortified bunker vs the dude with bloas so big he's gotta stand in a door way for a sec to let those clangers enter the room before him is going down on a sinking ship.
PR dept should totally be like, "Dude, remove it regardless of your political views, it's bad for your brand, and damaging our brand.

Ovechkin's statement also fits the narrative that Russia is apparently pushing domestically in Russia, it's not even a condemnation. Just saying "no more war" isn't good enough because Putin obviously doesn't want to spend any of his despot money on war either.
Anything short of an actual condemnation from Ovechkin should be seen as supporting Vladimir Putin's invasion considering his very well documented open support and campaigning.

Ovi has issues, he was leading the league in scoring until the NHL said they weren't going to the Olympics then his game went right into the shiter , big baby. Got Covid right before the All-STAR game, oops, now puts up that picture of him and Putin . Talk about someone i have lost respect for.

Players defecting from KHL, two teams have quit league, two teams near bankruptcy, no access to to money for oligarchs who own the teams…let’s see how long the KHL is viable!

Thanks for calling our attention to this. ^^^

Jokerit is one team, with some longstanding relevance to the Jets prospect pipeline:

Finnish team leaves KHL playoffs over Ukraine

Interesting to see that it's a team fan organization that helped push this along. These are very common in the UK and Europe, especially where attached to football clubs. I've often wondered why they aren't more of a thing over here.
