What should really happen with suspensions is the team takes a salary cap hit. That would start cleaning up the Rempe type bullshit real quick.
I was thinking that the team who suffered the offense should get to pick which player on the offending team has to serve the suspension

All of a sudden there'd be pressure from within your own dressing room to stop doing stupid shit. Leadership groups would be going to coaches to ask them not to play borderline NHLers like Rempe. His "upside" isn't worth the risk

I think that is probably a step too far as you would be directly interfering with uninvolved players livelihoods. But lets say there was some formula where players suspended in a season, their suspended salary would be deducted from next season's salary cap and donated to player safety issues the following season.

I like that idea, but it would have more teeth if it were a fixed minimum cost to the team. eg, $100,000 per game. Rempe's loss of salary for 8 games will be ~80,000, a hit to him personally, but next to nothing if applied to the cap. $800,000, while only 1% of the cap, would sting.

ducks come back from 4-1 to beat the utahs in a shootout
The Ducks remind me of the Oilers during their Rebuild 1.0 with Hall, Eberle, RNH, Yakupov, etc...

Some really great young talent with maybe questionable attitudes around how to play the game at a pro level. Mix in a mishmash of vets who haven't really won anything and aren't maybe the best mentors to for the younger guys

Anyway, them and Buffalo are cautionary tales for the "big tank rebuild"

The last time a player was suspended for 8 games (or more) was May 19, 2021 (Avs Kadri got 8 for an illegal check to the head on Blues Faulk). This was a few weeks before Scheifele got his 4 game suspension for Charging on Jake Evens, to give some perspective. 2+ full seasons since the last 8 game suspension...

The last time a player got more than 8 games was September 30, 2018 - a year and a half before COVID. Tom Wilson got 20 games (reduced to 14 on appeal) for murdering the CEO of a US health insurance company an illegal check to the head of Blues Oskar Sundqvist.

The lesson here is: don't pull this stuff on the Blues.

Rempe has moved up my list to the biggest idiot in the league and that includes Tom Wilson. You can’t have a talenless goon make that play on one of the top defensemen in the league. Imagine if he did that to Morrissey our board would lose their shit. That’s not a f***ing hockey play, he came off his feet and hit him directly from behind in the numbers, into the boards.

8 Games is bullshit for a guy that is in and out of the line up anyways.

There is just not enough punishment. Losting Rempe and his salary do not hurt the Rangers in the slightest. There is no punishment.

Yeah, there's punishment. 8 games isn't bullshit. Plus it goes on his permanent NHL record and will guarantee much harsher penalties if he pulls this act again.

Suspend coach for same number of games as the player. Teams forfeit high draft picks.

Not for every supplementary discipline case of course, but extreme examples, repeat offenders. This kind of incident ends immediately.

Teams put these players on the ice - knowing that is their role. It is clearly deliberate. Punishing that player is meaningless. Punish the team, the coach, the GM.

It isn't punishment. That player would never have cashed an NHL paycheque if it wasn't for this kind of play.

Broadcasters were fawning all over him when the Rangers first brought him up like he was some rock star not some guy who can barely play the game and was out to hurt other players. Those same broadcasters are now appalled at his actions on the ice, this suspension will end and he will get back on the ice. Hopefully the NHL has seen the last of him but I doubt it.
