Pretty clear that Tatar should be the 13th or 14th forward on this team. Would like to see us add a top 6 winger to play in the top 6 to replace Palat and drop in to the 4th line in an ideal world later in the year.
Tatar can't be talked about as being the 13th or 14th forward until MacDermid becomes the 14th or 15th forward. And that's not even getting into Dowling, who is only here because of injuries. Tatar is definitely better than him.

And I'm not convinced Tatar is actually worse than Palat in the year 2024. I'm really not. I think the only thing that would indicate Palat is better than Tatar is he's signed for 2 more years after this and makes like roughly 3.5 more times as much as Tatar, who is also not signed beyond this year. Now why exactly would that make him better than Tatar? It wouldn't. But it keeps him up on the organization hierarchy.

At least that random Pens blog was free to read. Not much separates The Athletic from the rest of these blowhard sports sites these days besides the paywall.

I guess I don't mind The Athletic, although they do have some writers who I'd actively avoid. I guess I can't help but compulsively read articles about offer sheets since the writers regularly get the details incorrect.

Mirtle messed up and assumed any RFA is offer sheet eligible. I remember Dom writing one and not knowing that the compensation is calculated differently for a 6/7 year offer sheet.

does anyone have a weird devils memory you aren’t even sure is real?

because here’s mine. in my head, halfway through the first round of the playoffs in 2012, the devils switched from their classic (cup era) goal horn to the one we currently have and i have no clue why.
That’s actually true and did happen.

Game 3 of that series was our first home game of the playoffs that year. They used the old Meadowlands goal horn sound clip for that game. We wound up going up 3-0 in that game and blew the 3-0 lead and lost 4-3. So they went right back to the actual Prudential Center horn for game 4 of that series and the remainder of the playoffs.

There was talk at the time that it was switched back for superstitious reasons, since we lost that game by blowing a huge lead after that going off 3 times for the 3 goals.

I remember people saying that the NJSEA actually owned the sound clip and rights to that horn with their ownership of the old arena.

We’ve brought it back on occasion for Retro/throwback nights. Like when we’ve worn the retro/reverse retro stuff.

I’m not sure why they decided to use the old horn to start the 2012 playoffs and not the first few years of playoffs in Newark. And I’m not sure if it was only ever supposed to be a one game thing that playoffs or what happened after we used it had them quickly change it back to the actual horn.

I was in attendance for most of that florida series (home and road!) so I remember blowing that 3-0 lead all too well. I also remember thinking "ooh! old goal horn!!!" and then the next game thinking "oh... new goal horn???"

Maybe it's nostalgia but nothing will ever beat the old one for me. Every time I hear it I picture Elias skating with a goofy grin and his arms up, or Frieze skating away with an arm behind his back after he iced game 7, or when the guy hit the button like 11 times after Langenbrunner scored the 2OT goal against the Senators in 07.

Tatar constantly fumbles the puck. I have no interest in him being a regular in the playoffs. Palat, of course is grossly overpaid and probably a buy-out candidate after this year, but at least has some grit and is a playoff performer.

My guess is there will be a forward upgrade at the deadline that pushes Tatar out, provided we're fairly healthy.

IMO, Palat is here for the playoffs. Obviously they need some production from him during the season, but they see him as a playoff producer.

1000% agree on the old goal horn. It had a sharp piercing sound. Get chills just hearing that thing blare in the highlights from yesteryear. New horn is cool but feels more run of the mill. CAA horn stood out

From an asset management perspective, I'd let Palat pad his stats on the Jack and Bratt line to make him a more tradeable asset, resign tatar for cheap again next year.

if i heard both one after the other sure i would pick up the difference but impressive you could pickup the difference years apart.
