Agreed. People joke that Yzerman hates him doing the Gritty as a celly. I don't think it is something that silly, but there has to be something more than his on-ice play.

I wouldn’t have guessed that our goal differential and the wild were only 3 goals apart. I feel we’ve had more blowouts against us this year than normal and it shouldn’t be a thing that we’re close to the wild right now given their start….

The Wild better be careful with their best player and other good ones sidelined. Going 11/7 for a stretch might be best for them.

To put it in perspective, the Blues have 6 players remaining from the 2018-2019 team…

And there are now only 2 players left (Pastrnak and McAvoy) from that Bruins team we beat in the Cup.

I dunno. I haven’t watched Colorado since 4 nations but they’re totally different now after the big trade deadline changes. I think both Makar and Nate are maybe only matched by Wyatt Johnston but it’ll be a few years as he grows until he impacts the game consistently at the level they do. Colorado has Nelson and Necas as really interesting secondary threats.

And heiskenan is out.

That series will be awesome. I think I hate each team equally.

Anyway......I put out into the ether a call for a response from one of y'all regarding my takes on Dallas.
I fully expected someone to inquire about my current stance on Dallas, but this response/inquiry is disappointing. We all know that many individuals here wait for opportunities to call out a member's past posts. It's weak and lame.

Anyway x2......Their defense is a little better with Ceci, but it still stinks. There are TWO reasons Dallas is in the place they currently are. Seguin and Jake. Seguin helped the team bank points early in the season by ripping off 20 pts in 19 games. He finally succumbed to his injury, but might be back for the playoffs.

Jake has been Vezina-level this season. Nuff sed.

My deep-dive into the Dallas Stars was an exercise in thought. Not an exercise in right or wrong. It sounds like you want to be right. I don't care to be right. I care to analyze and if part of my analysis is off, then so be it.

Maybe I will try the gotcha thang and sneak around waiting to call out someone for a previous position.

My recommendation to you and to all of HF is to think for the sake of thinking, not for the sake of being right.

Both Dumoulin and LSchenn returned 2nd rounders.
I have very little doubt that Suter could have gotten the same had we been inclined to move him.
However, the Parayko injury and the rumors of Suter wanting to return for another year are enough reason for me to understand not dealing him.

Dumoulin valued at $3.15M x 2 in the summer of 2023 and L Schenn was valued at $2.75M x 3 that same summer. Last summer, the market valued Suter at $775k with bonuses that could see him earn up to $2.25M on a 1 year deal. Schenn and Dumo each have 2 Cup rings, while Suter has zero. They are both younger, bigger, and more physical than Suter. Schenn has another year of term and the Ducks retained 50% on Dumo. Suter is a pending UFA and I genuinely don't know how retention works with bonuses.

I think there is plenty of reason to doubt that Suter's value was the same as those two players.

I like the deal for them, turned a former 2nd rounder into a 1st and a 2nd(Minten). Thats how you succeesfully shuffle assets during a re-tool/re-build. Always reclaiming more than what you spent. It 100% doesnt look like they are looking to win the next year or two, if they kept Carlo he would just help them earn a later pick during those seasons. Weve preached against that for our own team, and learned how detrimental it can be last draft by losing out on Dickinson and Buium. Smart move not sabotaging their own pick.

We would gain value if we traded Parayko (former 3rd) for a 1st and Minten, but I'd be absolutely livid if we did that. We would gain value if we traded Binner (former 3rd) for the same package and I would be pretty damn mad. We would gain value if we traded Kyrou (former 2nd) for a 1st and Minten...

I don't think a trade is smart just because you acquire a greater value of assets than what you spent to get the player.

Carlo is in the age group of the core they should be building around. He's just 2 years older than Mittlestadt, who they just acquired presumably for his potential to improve the team. They reach UFA at the same time. Unless the plan is to tear it down by moving Pasta and McAvoy for futures, I don't think getting intentionally worse for 2025/26 and 2026/27 is a good decision. They have a top 5 winger in the league who is 28 and locked up long term. They have a legit #1 D in the league who is 27 and locked up long term. Swayman had a brutal start to the season after missing camp, but he's .908 in his last 25 games and got that contract because up to that point they very much believed he was a stud #1. I think it is very reasonable to say that they have a #1 goalie.

Do they have holes? Absolutely. E Lindholm hasn't worked out as a 1C. They need to get better at center and add some depth through the lineup. But they have a number of very high end pieces in their mid-to-late 20s who are locked up and they dealt with some pretty significant injuries this year. I really, really don't think that they are at the stage of their organization where they should just be writing off the next 2 seasons.

We had a number of back and forths about Dallas in the offseason and first couple months of the season where you made a number of conclusory statements about Nill doing a poor job and Dallas being a pretender (or maybe you described them as a paper tiger, I don't remember the exact language used). I remember you talking about them being in trouble when Seguin went down. And even in this post, you are making a number of conclusory statements that don't really sound like an exercise in thought. I'm not looking to discount your other opinions or call out your Stars opinions out of the blue, but it's not just making stuff up to say that you've viewed the Stars as pretenders. That is very much my understanding of your position on the Stars through our in depth back-and-forth discussions.

As to your points about the team this year, I very much disagree that it has just been Seguin and Otter.

They are 29-14-2 since Seguin left the lineup, which is a 109 point pace. Otter has been great, but he's at a .909 SV% and a 9.7 GSAA. Really strong numbers, but it isn't like he's dragging a team kicking and screaming or performing on par with Helly. And the Stars are playing at a nearly-identical points share with DeSmith in net. Again, Otter has been great and Seguin was great before getting hurt. But you don't get to 3rd in the NHL through 64 games based on 19 games from a forward and your starter going 9.7 GSAA through 46 starts.

They already have 3 guys with 25+ goals and another sitting at 24. Robertson and Duchene both have 66 points in 64 games. Johnston has 60 points in 64 games. Hintz has 52 points in 59 games. They were top 5 offensively at 5 on 5 and overall before adding Rants an Granlund. I don't love their D, but they absolutely don't stink. They are middle of the pack pretty much across the board defensively and Ceci has been good in his time there so far. I don't think they'll make a deep run without Heiskanen, but we haven't heard anything ruling him out for a playoff return and I think they absolutely have the firepower and goaltending to win 1 (or maybe 2) rounds without him.

I'd genuinely like to hear your current thoughts on them beyond what you've said in the past about Seguin and Otter being everything for them. I can't tell from this post whether you still view them as pretenders or not.

EDIT: For the sake of clarity I characterized Dallas as “a bit of a paper tiger”, because they were.

With the additions of Ceci, Granlund and Rantanen, I do not see them as merely paper tigers. If they can continue great team defense, then they should make some noise in the playoffs.
