his buyout is going to have a $6.5 cap hit in '25-'26. You're really telling me no one in the league would have taken him for free at 50% retained for 3 years?
Maybe, but also the retention spot would have been given away for free as well. If they trade anyone else of value that retention slot can make it way more profitable for them.

does Nashville now have the worst forward corps in NHL history?

It's going to be hard to top post trade deadline Blackhawks from last season. Well past their prime Jonathan Toews and Tyler Johnson were the best forwards on that team. At least the Preds still have a star forward in Forsberg and a couple middle six players.

They can flip Saros, Trenin and possibly Barrie at the deadline if they want. Keeping that retention slot open will help and I think the buyout costs slightly less than retention.

I guess if they don't expect the cap hit to matter in the next 3 years, it's a fairly meaningless $1.5 for 3 more years after that, so no harm no foul.

But we've already seen the impact a buyout that seems meaningless at the time can quickly have on a team with the Schneider and Kuokkanen buyouts we have now. I know Duchene has some warts, but he's probably the best UFA on the market now. I just really can't believe nobody was willing to offer anything at 50% retained and this was the better option. I guess Trotz is planning to really play some 4D chess with those retention spots over the next few years but that's truly surprising to me.

50% retention would've been $4, the buyout costs $5.5 and 6.5 in years 2 and 3, then extends the impact by 3 more years.

Retention isn't worth a buyout because you don't even need to retain yourself, you can run retention through another team and usually have to pay something like a 4th round pick to get 25% retained (depending on the salary).

I don't think this was worth the flexibility and surely someone would've taken Duchene at less than 50% retained imo. Maybe you think you can't cap yourself out in 3 years given what's happening there, but I'd still rather have myself out of retention slots than with a buyout sitting on the cap for 3 more years.

Habs fans suck.
Aren't we used to this by now. Internet anonimity + emotional hot takes results in stuff like this. Just need to ignore it. Just like the stuff said to K-Andre Miller in an anonymous chat doesn't represent hockey fans as a whole, this shouldn't represent Habs fans either. Just a bunch of idiots who know they won't get any consequences for being stupid.

It makes no sense to hold on to Saros at this point. His value isn't going to get any higher.

Hard disagree. Hellebuyck is already on the market and is apparently having difficulty getting traction. Though I suppose it matters what locations he's willing to go to.

The reason Hellebuyck's not gaining traction is because the contract extension wants leaked. Saros is locked up for 2 more seasons at $5 Million and he's younger. His market would be significantly more vast.

This is going to be a wacky free agent frenzy. So many teams with cap space, no one worth a damn to sign, no one really has to be dumped anymore. Like how is Carolina going to weaponize that space? Not obvious to me at least.

Yeah, you're talking about an arguably better goalie, younger, and locked up for 2 seasons at an AAV most teams could fit just by moving their current starter. Most teams that would want Hellebuyck can basically only afford him as a rental whereas Saros you're guaranteed two runs with.

But I'm not sure teams have that much to offer for him. So sure, now you might bring Toronto or Pittsburgh into the fold, but what do they have that Nashville's going to want for a goalie of that caliber? The Kings would want him - are they willing to give up Byfield? They no longer have much else at this point - I don't think Turcotte is worth a whole lot.

Whoa.

Trotz does not play. Wants to move forward. Respect. And ownership is truly serious if they're willing to eat that.

Also would never have guessed that Trotz would be the guy to see his club so clearly. First ballot HoFer for that alone.
Well that’s the thing, it hasn’t been his club for like a decade. I doubt anyone is still playing there that he coached.

I think Nashville swinging and missing on moving into the top 5 may have shifted gears for them into a full blown rebuild

True it shouldn't.

But as it always has been the case : The vocal minority yells the loudest.
