Around The NHL #13

Maybe I missed it in another thread, but did anyone else see that story about Jason Demers and his 700th career start for Edmonton?

Apparently, Tocchet healthy-scratched him for the remaining games of his last season with us while he sat at 699. It was a prominent feature of the story.

Every time I've believed that there wasn't anything left to criticize that meathead for, something else has always popped up.

Demers and Tocchet deserve eachother. I’m not sure there’s a player that better represents that darkest of eras.

That's a no Win situation for Tocchet....for every forum40 member who cares to criticize him for scratching Demers there is probably a forum40 member who would criticize him for putting Demers in the lineup just to get his career milestone.

During his time, so many bad choices by GM's, a piss poor roster, and Tocchet and his staff....seems like Tocchet bears (no pun intended) all the blame.

Man, as bad as our team was, you don't scratch the guy at 699 starts for the rest of the season unless you have something personal against him. That's my opinion. If we were contending for anything or had some hotshot prospect that needed ice time, that's one thing, but we had none of that.

There is nothing special about 700 games...it's not 1000. Who cares!

He obviously did - especially given that he pretty clearly wasn't banking on getting many more past that milestone.

Demers probably isn't anyone's idea of an elite player, but he's a good guy from all reports, and showing humanity to people is very often the difference between good organizations and bad ones. Little things like letting a guy achieve a milestone he cares about, or playing a guy in front of his hometown fans for the first time, etc., create an atmosphere that players like, because players are people, not numbers in a spreadsheet.

Having a guy like Tourigny on the bench - who, I think, absolutely would have given Demers his 700th start - is appealing not only to the players currently on the team, but to players who may have a choice to come play here someday. Having a meathead dipshit who can't string together two coherent sentences and who plays favorites like some goombah GoodFellas wannabe isn't as much of a selling point (sorry, Canucks fans).

TL;DR - I can't wait until we stop showing up in stories as a cautionary tale of a franchise made up of monkeys f***ing footballs.

Come on. It's a big f***ng deal to Demers.
Coaches will notice 999 games, probably don't bat an eye at 699 when it comes to the lineup. I've heard Demers complain about it, but I haven't read where he says that he actually spoke to the team about how important it was to him. Maybe he did and maybe he didn't.

Edit: The Oilers haven't gone out of their way to help him get there until now either, two seasons later, but we're the bad guys.
