For sure, Zito's done well, but it's like beating the medium AI in Age of Empires 2 with excellent macro and micro. Like, yeah, you played well, but the difficulty is also pretty low.
Maybe... but no one wanted Reinhart. And Calgary had given up on Bennett.

Their third pairing is a Vancouver buyout and Kulikov... fourth line looks just like our fourth line in Maurice's last year here...

There's like two guys on this team that were 'Florida or bust'

Maybe Zito's biggest strength was having a direct link to Treliving...

Those two guys have been arguably their two most important pieces, though.

Some teams just know how to find the right reclamation projects.

Probably because guys like Crosby not only work hard, but they also know that to win, you need to work hard.
For some of the high end players, I don't think they realize they need to work hard - they just have to get 10% better - lol.

It's not just the work - it's the attitude that you will leave it all out there, you'll work those hard areas of the ice, and you'll sacrifice.
And you look around the league and teams that have those types of players usually play a hard game - it rubs off when the high skill players are the guys that get it.

There is a decision stars need to make, do you want to play winning hockey the hard way or do you want optimize your individual scoring stats the easier way and get paid.

I think guys that pile up the points can justify their off script approach to themselves pretty easily (sadly).

You see it in minor hockey all the time too. Some kids love to score points and hate to check and it never goes away. Their energy level shoots up to 10 when they have the puck or their team is in the attack zone and it drops to 5 the moment their team loses possession.

If only the Jets had a complete winner of a coach like Maurice
I liked Maurice but lets not forget he quit on us. Not saying that we didn't need a change but when our head coach has to fly all the way to Finland during a off season to try and calm the waters down because Laine is pissed off about not playing with the number 1 center that this team didn't have issues under him. Chevy better pick the right coach this time because its gotta be Chevy's last chance as well.

I'm happy for Maurice but his success the last few years has made some forget his own blindspots and biases with us. He spent a lot of time on Ehlers and Laine's games while largely ignoring KC and Mark. Morrissey also blossomed into a Norris caliber dmen away from him. Coaches aren't infallible, sometimes a different coach sees things the previous coach misses. One of the reasons i wouldn't be opposed to a new GM. We've had the exact same management team for over a decade, I can't imagine many new ideas coming from that group.

But in the interim it will be interesting to see how the Rangers respond. It will also be interesting to see how the Dallas/Oilers series goes. It will be stars vs. Depth again.

I think Chevy has done a good job of keeping us competitive over the years but he better pick the right coach because i believe he is on his last one or at least he should be. As you say it will be time for new ideas if we don't do well this upcoming season.

Yes, he has done a good job of building a perennial playoff team. That is an accomplishment given our market constraints. Looking at other small and undesirable markets that are just spinning their wheels it should be apparent that it's not easy to get where we have gotten to.

I just don't want to turn into Minnesota North where we are good enough to get in and then become first round fodder for whoever we play. This group needs to figure out how to win in the postseason.

And here I was 2 years ago wanting nothing to do with Tocchet :help:
There was plenty of scoffing on here when he took the Canucks job

There is something to be said for guys who played the game the "right way" who become coaches. Players are generally gonna buy in easier for them because they've been there, done that - tocchet asking a player to play their hearts out is easy for him since he made a living doing it in the NHL himself

Just goes to show its incredibly hard to judge coaches on bottom feeding teams.
