The company making his sticks stopped making them and he had to switch this year. It takes time to adjust after years of using the same manufactured stick.
The Caps were sellers this year and have picks stockpiled for the next 2 years plus their AHL did win the calder last year so their prospect pool looks good.

That's the problem with aging vets ... they are great to have on a winning team but if the team isn't winning they have no heart.
