I truly appreciate what Chevy et al. have done in putting together the pieces to ice a truly competitive team, one that could (I hope, should) be a serious contender for the SC this season and beyond. However, the "draft and develop" narrative that the team's ownership/management group have put out there since Day 1, a theme that has been amplified by the media, doesn't seem to be the case. Just my opinion.
We have more team drafted players on our roster than the vast majority of the teams in the league.

teams get players via draft, signing or trades. from WPGs POV the latter two are difficult for marquee guys since they're not a big UFA player, and NTCs block WPG for a good chunk of players out there. so draft-and-develop has to be there competitive advantage and area they're above average in. TBL can draft and sign guys pretty freely, so if they're not as good as draft-develop i don't think they really care (they still do get v good players though) same thing w/ VGK.

I actually had a look at current Jets players drafted in the 2nd round or later. It's actually worse than I thought. Only current roster players drafted outside first round are ...

Samberg (2nd round, 2017)
Appleton (6th round, 2016)
Hellebuyck (5th round, 2012)
Lowry (3rd round, 2011)

The only guy that's actually in the NHL that Jets drafted (any round) within the last five years is Perfetti (2020).

... that actually made me a bit depressed.

But at least our first rounders have generally panned out at least up until ten years ago (Scheif 2011, Trouba 2012, Morrissey 2013, Ehlers 2014, Connor 2015, Laine 2016). Even our first rounders have been pretty weak sauce (not even in the NHL except Perfetti) since then. Oof.
yeah i've been saying it for a long while. You can add Copp and Poolman to the list too as former players

the Jets 1st rounders from 2011-2016 were also for the majority top half of the draft, pretty sure they had the highest average first pick behind EDM and BUF for that time-frame. so higher chances to grab a good player as you noted. from 2018 onward, can include 2017 when they moved back, they've been customarily picking in the latter half. Perfetti like you said is in the NHL as a top-10 pick.

Thanks for do this. Very interesting information especially for a "draft and develop " team. It would be interesting to compare with (all) other teams. Too much work though.
i had a spreadsheet of all this from last off-season for draft picks 2011-2019 with stats up until the end of the 2022-2023 season

again, not including this season, and includes players picked from 2011-2019; amount of gp and pts details from those 2nd-7th rd picks, and by no means is this perfect there's a bit of manual stuff that id need to do;

WPG is 18th in the NHL from most GP (this is all NHL games; ie Poolman had 43/163 gp with VAN that gets included). For scoring they were 25th most points or PPG from those players (removing goalies from the equation)

We are also trying to contend so the org is looking for established players to compliment the core they have drafted.

We are going about it more like Carolina and less like Dallas.

NHL Salary Cap - $83,500,000

Winnipeg Jets
Roster and Buried Cap Hit - $79,417,858
Dead Cap Hit - $2,750,000

Vegas
Roster and Buried Cap Hit - $94,198,317

Toronto
Roster and Buried Cap Hit - $97,809,783

Tampa
Roster and Buried Cap Hit - $91,929,165
Dead Cap Hit - $1,656,250

So why do we have a cap?

Is it just me or does it seem like all these teams other than the Canucks over paying for Lindholm are getting players for nothing specially since the original teams are retaining 50% salary and paying a 4th or 5th to get a 3rd team to take on some more of the salary.
A late first is 20-32 so basically its nothing.
It sure feels like that to me. How come Vegas always gets these insane deals where they get top players for basically nothing? Are players getting their agents to go around and say they will only play in Vega? I heard some rumblings about Hanafin's agent.

Why are other GMs so intent on helping Vegas win the cup every year?

Vegas didn't draft Stone.
Vegas has only been around for 7 drafts and they haven't picked in the Top 10 since that first draft...and they've traded away a ton of guys. Suzuki for Pacioretty, Brannstrom for Stone, Krebs for Eichel. Wheeling and dealing. Only 1 Cup to show for it though... :sarcasm:

The bold is what I don't understand unless there is money passed under the table.
Remember Cody Eakins $3.8M the Jets took from Vegas so Vegas was able to upgrade.
They following year Jets took Statsney $6.5 M to help the Vegas upgrade again.
Mean while all the top teams today are getting players with 50-75% retained ... wtf.
