Stankoven wouldn't be in the lineup if it was for the injury to Seguin. Now they got a taste and it should be hard for them to take him out
He was drafted the same year as Lucius.
Lucius has played in 65 games since 2020-2021 the season.
That's an average of 16 games per year!

Yup. Their scouting is absurd. Their 2nd round picks are always freaking homeruns. Grabbing guys like Robertson, Oettinger, and Stankoven. And here we are trotting out Iafalo out in our top 6. Barf.
Yeah let's just ignore all of our drafted home grown talent. Barf

I actually had a look at current Jets players drafted in the 2nd round or later. It's actually worse than I thought. Only current roster players drafted outside first round are ...

Samberg (2nd round, 2017)
Appleton (6th round, 2016)
Hellebuyck (5th round, 2012)
Lowry (3rd round, 2011)

The only guy that's actually in the NHL that Jets drafted (any round) within the last five years is Perfetti (2020).

... that actually made me a bit depressed.

But at least our first rounders have generally panned out at least up until ten years ago (Scheif 2011, Trouba 2012, Morrissey 2013, Ehlers 2014, Connor 2015, Laine 2016). Even our first rounders have been pretty weak sauce (not even in the NHL except Perfetti) since then. Oof.

looking at the teams that have been in the playoff regularly that isn't even that bad, take Carolina for example they have been well known as a great drafting team and they only jarvis and kochetov in the league from the past 5 drafts despite having a million draft picks + most of these prospects take years to develop so you can't really look at the past 3 drafts to get an accurate picture of who's going to be an nhler

Thanks for do this. Very interesting information especially for a "draft and develop " team. It would be interesting to compare with (all) other teams. Too much work though.

Even in the back half of the 1st round the Jets haven't done well. Kyle Connor at 17 (thanks Boston!) is the only good player from picks 15-32.

Fair comment, although it's not the last three drafts, we have to go back to 2016 to find an NHLer not named Perfetti wearing Jets colours. But that is a good comparison with Carolina, a perennially strong team. Now, this whole conversation started with Dallas so let me look them up ...

Agreed way too much work. But since Dallas was referenced and they've been comparable to Winnipeg or better in terms of standings each year, I think it would be fair to look at them.

Wyatt Johnson - 1st round, 2021
Stankoven - 2nd round, 2021
Harley - 1st round, 2019
Dellandrea - 1st round, 2018

Then there's 2017 - Robertson (2nd round), Oettinger (1st round), Heiskanen (1st round), Peterson (5th round)

Versus Jets 2017 to present we have only Perfetti and Gustafsson. Stars have been quite a bit better than Jets in both first and subsequent rounds especially that monster 2017 draft.

Hindsight and all that, but Wyatt Johnston would be real nice right now as opposed to a perpetually broken Chaz Lucius.....

I truly appreciate what Chevy et al. have done in putting together the pieces to ice a truly competitive team, one that could (I hope, should) be a serious contender for the SC this season and beyond. However, the "draft and develop" narrative that the team's ownership/management group have put out there since Day 1, a theme that has been amplified by the media, doesn't seem to be the case. Just my opinion.

I think we have several on the horizon though. PS, Samberg, Lowry and Hellebuyck are home runs.

The orgs priority changed from building to trying to win. So less opportunities for young players.
Holy revisionist history... our D core was a complete shambles from 2019-2022

Explain how Sbisa, bitetto, Morrow were 'trying to win'... then we panicked and brought in Schmidt

I'd legit try and get Capo some playing time before April in case we need him

Our depth was also god awful back then. Guys like Logan Shaw, Gabe Bourque, Nick Shore all had at least a semi-regular role on the team. Plus Letestu probably would’ve too.

This is why practically all arguments of "but the prospects weren't good enough" are dumb, man. We employed proven bad players. All the prospects are good enough to try over the Logan Shaws of the world.

Buff retiring screwed up the defense with Trouba wanting out and Myers becoming FA ... Chevy had no choice but to get Schmidt with that contract.

A lot of the Jets’ competition have just made significant moves. Hope Chevy has his phone turned on at least.

The trade for Schmidt was 3 years after Enstrom retired, 2 years after Trouba and Myers left, and 2 years after Buff's last game (but there was some uncertainty on whether he would return for a few months at the start of the 2019-20 season).
