Vancouver was never going to trade Pettersson, they just dangled him out there to help make them not seem as desperate to move Miller. But it was always going to be Miller.

From the way the radio heads and their guests were talking Petterson is the player a team would want out of that group and Miller was not enticing at all. Sounds like he is more the disruptive and dysfunctional - so a good fit for the Rangers :sarcasm: :D

Rangers will not make the playoff .Miller won't change much to that team. They need most of the time elite goaltending to win games or win by playing high offense game.

I think they were likely to make the playoffs prior to the deal and this only helps.

.894 SV% and a -0.071 goals saved above average per 60. Those are improvements on last season, he went from putrid to mediocre.
He has been undeniably better than last year, but he's also got soft deployment and infrequent starts as a backup. No matter what struggles Swayman has had, and there've been a lot, they haven't rode Korpisalo for any stretch of games this year. He's a backup and is handling that decently. The issue in Ottawa was the expectation he could be a consistent starter playing a starters load. He got himself a nice contract from an outlier UFA season and should be an okay backup for Boston, right where he belongs imo.

Got to hope the Islanders can defeat Tampa tonight. It's a real dog fight between Ottawa, Columbus & TBL for the 3rd divisional seed & the 1st wildcard slot.

I took a look at the Boston goalie stats this year. Korpisalo’s are slightly better, and Korpisalo has more shutouts, although in fewer games as you noted. Goalie stats are also reflective of the team in front of them. The Senators have been pretty poor defensively in years past. We can see how much better we are doing this year with the team playing better team D. Conversely, Boston isn’t as strong this year, so hard for the goalies to have top notch stats.

Ya backup deployment with less starts, mostly in back to backs, and pegged opponents to deploy against. I think that's fair, but there's still clearly differences in goaltending talent. I'd bet my house that the Sens wouldn't be near a playoff spot had they just kept Korpisalo. I think he's an NHL level backup, not suited to be a #1 and play that much or have those expectations, like many others in the league. He's finding some success by being properly slotted again. I'd bet things would look worse if Boston tried to ride him, and I think they know that and that's a big reason why they haven't gone there despite Swayman's struggles.

The Senators have improved defensively, but Forsberg is still only rocking .003% higher save % and Korpisalo .004% higher than they did last year in Ottawa, so I think it's fair to say they're both still limited to that backup tender level, maybe even low end backup, type range. With Ullmark and Merilainen putting up .921 and .915, there's a pretty clear drop off to Forsberg despite playing admirably at times (maybe that changes for Leevi the more he's seen by the league). The only surprises to me out of all 5 guys mentioned above is how much Swayman has struggled and how well Leevi has played. Despite the teams in front of them, I'd think Swayman would still show that type of difference in performance as we've seen from Linus/Leevi vs. Forsberg. If we dropped Ullmark in on last years Ottawa team, it's not like he'd have posted .890 like Forsberg & Korpisalo. Maybe he struggles to put up his .918 career average though.

I was hoping to see Zibanejad traded... Rangers fans have been hard on him

And why are TV commentators always acting like GI was so hard to understand? I mean Greer was in contact with Mrazek but he was clearly pushed by Dickinson so in that case, there's no GI. Why did the Blackhawks appeal exactly? Don't they understand that already?

I don't get it.

Holy. Vancouver a little “trigger happy” last night?

They move Miller which i knew about before going to bed. Then, I was totally confused this morning thinking they also moved on from Pettersson. Turns out they acquired a different Pettersson. 🤣🤣🤦‍♂️

My only thought so far is Canucks handled things about as well as a previous Sens Owner and “yes man” GM would have done.

Canucks have 3 different Pettersson now

Yes, the improvement in team D has been significant and the big reason why we are doing better. And, with the amount of time Ullmark has missed due to injury, we’ve been winning even with just our back up goalies. Winning is most important thing, the rest is less important details.

I would argue it's both coming together and not simply one or the other, but certainly one doesn't work without the other. I don't buy for a second that they'd be where they are now with the same tandem from last year. Merilainen/Ullmark performing so much better than either Korpisalo or Forsberg this year is sort of proof of that imo, even though the latter have done okay in small roles. There's clearly still a large gap in quality of play.
