The Saturday “Hockey Night in Canada” is a legendary, tradition though. Once their familiar theme music started, it was hockey watching time. It will seem kind of weird not to have it anymore.
Personally, that “tradition” feeling went out the window when Sportsnet took over. Maybe its just me getting old and growing out of it but it has definitely lost its magic for me.

They sold the rights to the music to TSN, they partnered up with Rogers, they obsessed on leaf ball-washing, they assembled a panel of bland nincompoops for the intermissions, and they paid lip-service to hockey as a Canadian culture by organizing cheesy events. If there is nostalgia to be had, it's for the time before the partnership with Rogers.

I'd rather have my CBC tax money go toward supporting and broadcasting Olympic sports rather than expensive TV deals for pro sports. This could become its own new tradition. I don't know if it's still the case, but in France one of the public channels used to show Olympic sorts every Saturday afternoon. It would range from cycling to track&fields, rugby, swimming, etc, depending on whatever international event was worth showing: Tour de France, 5 (now 6) nations rugby tournament, World Track & Field championships, etc. So then when the Olympics would happen, people would actually know the athletes who are competing, from following them year round.

Because why would we want a so-called 'national institution' to be broadcast OTA for just any Canadian to watch on a national broadcaster? Not when there's money to be made!

How I long for the days of catching practically every Sens game on CBC and the New RO/A-Channel. I never realized how good I had it.
Newer ways of doing the same thing is often not progress. As per always, follow the money

Ya, I left Canada before this Sportsnet thing became reality. I’ll remember HNIC for what it was for many decades, albeit the years are slipping by.

I’m talking about things much further back in time than what you are talking about.

I don't think you understand what enshitification is then... there's lots to criticize CBC over, putting profits over user experience isn't really one of them though, they don't seem to care about either of those things.... the care about accessibility and serving a diverse demographic at the expense of profits or user experience.
😀 No, I understand it. I just think poorly of CBC and everything it does. I would happily see its funding eliminated. But we're skating dangerously close to a different conversation.

Coach's Corner sucked. What adults still watched that segment? Not that they replaced it with something worth watching, but it was not exactly hard hitting analysis.

It was entertaining even though Don was a liar who would slander members of the Senators organization on multiple occasions.

It would be worth bringing Don back for the sole purpose of telling Ron to shut the hell up when he starts going off on some attempt to create his own Canadian Heritage moment.

Yes, I remember that too. Or sometimes he'd completely miss an important factor and go on a long rant anyone watching the TV could see he was completely out to lunch on.

I enjoyed the Rock Em Sock Em's back in the day though!

I can't say I get much viewings of Ron anymore either. Those segments are either skipped cuz I'm on delay, watching another game on TV 2, or it's time for something else until the game is back on. Not worth my time.

That would be amazing. Also help elevate the CHL for the more casual hockey fans, as well. And I'm sure the CHL and the kids playing would love it.
Especially as the top pro sports leagues move further and further away from affordability for the average citizen. Garner some interest for the things more people can actually partake in.

You need to stop believing everything PP says my brother! CBC is part of the Canadian fabric, I grew up watching CBC like millions of Canadians. CBC is an integral part of Canada.

The CBC broadcast was redundant anyway, I never saw the point of them showing the leafs on both CBC and Sportsnet, especially with the Sens banished to some random channel.

If this means CBC pivots to showing more Olympic sports (track and fields, swimming, downhill skiing, speed skating; although I realize they already some of this to an extent), then it makes sense from the point of view of a public broadcasting channel focusing on non-pro sports.

I'm not sure how great of a sustainable business plan "oh hey this thing that happens for a month every couple of years is a huge success" is

I can buy into many of the "CBC is an integral part of Canada" arguments that justify CBC's existence, but that doesn't really work for me when it comes to HNIC. CBC is publicly funded and I assume has to pay some relatively large amount for NHL broadcast rights... so the question is why should our tax dollars be going in to the pockets of millionaires and billionaires?
