Pittsburghs GDT look exactly like ours last season. We might not get that 2nd 1st round pick if they keep this up.

Phil will be responsible for another coach getting fired and Crosbys slump. The Phil is spreading quickly.

Watched chunks of the Penguins & Stars game. Not sure I noticed Phil or heard his name at all. He was kind of invisible.

Indeed the Penguins look unremarkable in October. I wonder when they'll invest in defense. At least Maatta is back

The Kessel and Crosby experiment seems to be ending and Phil is skating with other players today at Pens practice.

The just wait until Phil gets a real centre position seems to be muddling the water, and now another team is finding out that Phil is not the guy that elevates his play with better players.

It's too bad Pittsburgh couldn't surround you with better players, always being saddled with a 3rd line centre. Poor you.

I still think Kessel will eventually drift down to the 3rd line and find his place as a tertiary scoring threat for the Pens of the likes that no other team in the league has. Right now Pittsburgh is still hoping against all evidence that they have a winger who is suited to play with a great center like either Crosby or Malkin.

From the few times I've seen the Pens play, Kessel seems to be the same player as always.
I'd blame Crosby.

Kessels +/- is even. He's only been on the ice for three out of 15 of Pittsburgh goals against.

He finally has a decent centre with him. Isn't attached to the hip on any mediocre centres like in his time here

I always thought Kessel would be a better linemate for Malkin, and Hornqvist better for Crosby.

Or it could be that Crosby is on a cold steak - something that happens to all players, and/or he and Kessel like playing chemistry.

I bet you he and Crosby will be tried together again later in the season.

Ultimately we've only seen a very small sample size of games to evaluate any player so far this season.

Edit:

Not to mention, entire Pens team is in a slump - and you can be sure Kessel isn't to blame for all of this. Heir coaching has been dreadful.

Kessel's best when he's the most talented guy on his line, he's terrible away from the puck even in the offensive end, he needs the puck on his stick to be effective imo, so even if he's playing with Malkin, Malkin will want the puck more and deserves to have it more. I think Kessel is best in a situation like Kane, playing on a 2nd line with a decent 2nd line center where he can have the puck on his stick and make plays either by shooting or passing. but he's the main driving force behind the line similar to how Kane is on his line.

Looks like trouble in Pittsburgh. 11 goals in 7 games? Oh my!
Something is wrong in Pittsburgh ... as evidenced by their late crumble last year.

Sadly this could all really turn out badly if we don't get a first round draft pick.
Discuss.

There is far too much skill on the lineup to miss the playoffs. They've been gotten a bit of bad luck, and all three of their main scorers are having cold streaks.

I'd say coaching is their biggest issue at the moment. The season is long enough for them to shake this off though.

Kuznetsov is playing out of this world right now. Last years playoffs he looked great but he shows no signs of slowing down.
