If they had any sense whatsoever they would either go ahead and draft the best defensive man they can with that pick, or trade it for a top pairing D-man.

If the Oilers end up with Mathews, all it tells me is that Chiarelli hasn't learned anything about this team. Talented forwards obviously isn't the issue here.

If you win the first overall, you can't pass on Matthews. You just can't. He's way too talented. Plus having Matthews/McDavid would be the Oilers version of Malkin/Crosby.

You pick Matthews and immediately go to other teams offering up some combination of RNH/Draisaitl/Yakupov/Hall to get a dmen. Someone will bite.

Sprong scores

so much for "boom or bust" drafting for Toronto. That lasted about 5 seconds when we traded down for Dermott.

Yeah, if you disregard every other pick in the draft

But that's what Leaf fans do!!! It's all gotta fit the narrative ;)

Hell the very next pick the Leafs made was a boom/bust pick with higher potential than Sprong IMO (Bracco...)

They should have been able to pull a 2nd to get Sprong out of that. Sprong was the guy to go for for sure.

A lot of people here wanted Sprong. Good hockey people if I remember the names of the posters.

We're not even a season past drafting our guys and Sprong is alreadu "the guy to go for for sure"?

Come on guys, Sprong looks like a fantastic young player, but you gotta remember that he's getting time with some of the top players in teh world.

We've also seen guys come into the league right away, make a big splash and then fade into obscurity.

You know what's also likely? Sprong becomes a solif top 6 winger for the Pens, and the Leafs have a solid top 6 dmen in Dermott. But we won't know for years. So let's settle down with teh hyperbole and let the season go on

It is going to be interesting to see how many of these graduated juniors continue their play once the veterans get up to speed.

Remember how Percy looked to start last year, and then the gap started getting closed quicker than he could handle.

Guaranteed contracts, other than smaller one that fit under the cap relief in the AHL, give the vets a cushion.

Let's wait another couple week and revisit Sprong and the juniors who are looking good right now, including Larkin and the Coyotes.

His first 3 games he looked like a passenger, didn't get very much icetime & did more watching on the ice then playing.

4th game, he scored, got more icetime & now people want him on the first line.

I would be surprised if he lasts more than the next 5 games & I think that will be best for him.

Yep, you don't pass on a talent like Matthews.

You get better at drafting defensemen with your other picks beyond the first round and or you trade other assets to bring in the right d men.

Is Matthews going to be better than Stamkos and Tavares? Because for them, trading down to get Doughty/Hedman could have been the right move.

I'd still take Tavares and Stamkos over those other guys - wouldn't be that hard of a decision either for me.

Finally McDavid gets rewarded. Nice shot!

Also Hall is a complete one trick pony. Don't understand some of the fan fare towards him.

The Oiler kids have been very good.

Calgary on the other hand might be on track for the season people thought they were going to have last year.

Crosby already had 9 points after 5 games last season. This year after 5 games he has 0 points. He has 60 points in his last 69 regular season games played.

What gives?

Are you telling me you wouldn't want what Sprong brings with 40 something pick? That's a steal man

He's slowing down for whatever reason. Maybe it's the cumulative effects of his injury ridden past, or he needs a change of scenery.

Unfortunately for Crosby his regular winger Pascal Dupuis is out recovering from blood clots so he has be saddled with someone else and its resulted in the worst start of his NHL career.

I'm sure when Dupuis returns Crosby and Kunitz will take off again statistically. :)

Mcdavid multi point and multi goal game!

He looks amazing out there, on a line with yak

McDavid put on a clinic in this game showing everyone a glimpse of what is to come.

He scored 2 goals, but his best play was a highlight reel beauty which didn't result in a goal or he would have had the hattrick.
