Much deserved though... He's a helluva good player! While it is a bit risky as he's only had one season where he put up numbers that deserve that kind of payment (or more), I have no doubt he'll have many similar performances in the years to come.

Not risky at all. The real risk would have been not locking him up through his prime. The guy is a legitimate superstar that satisfies their biggest weakness.

Turning heads along with Poirier was Mark Jankowski.

Good at both ends of the rink early on, he is clearly blossoming into a confident two-way player. During the scrimmage, he scored twice including the overtime winner for Team Red with 57.4 seconds left.

The 20-year-old forward from Providence was injured during last year’s training camp so there was plenty of interest in the evolution of his game. Huska was impressed.

Yes, probably should let tall skinny boys develop before you put the bust label on them at 20.

They were talking about him this week, and mentioned he was assigned defensive assignments at Championship winning Providence College.

Maybe the equivalent of Gauthier for the Flames?

Because everything is always hockey - Patrick Sharp to Dallas with Steven Johns in exchange for Trevor Daley and Ryan Garbutt.

Everyone should be extra happy with the return for Kessel.

Chicago got utterly fleeced.

I don't think that they got fleeced.

Both Sharp and Daley are at the same point in their careers. Sharp isn't going to be putting up the 70 point seasons of years past. Daley did average the most minutes in his career last year, but wasn't much help & didn't get any help on the blueline.

It really depends how Johns pans out in this deal because otherwise, it's a trade that helped out Chicago continue with their defensive depth.

The Stars were the 2nd best possession team with Daley NOT on the ice. Like, Daley is actually a horrible d-man and gigantic boat anchor. I find it hard to believe an organization that is well known for analytical thinking like the Hawks would take that on.

The Hawks got hosed here. We need to take advantage of a desperate Bowman on Bickell. We could probably get a fair amount for taking him on, perhaps in a Polak deal since they need a RHD that's ready now.

I disagree. This is like the Leafs trading Lupul and Percy for Daley. Its a bad deal for the Hawks.

Daley is absolutely dreadful. Garbutt is better than his reputation though. Still not much of a haul for Sharp, who although on decline is still a good player.

Bowman did not have to retain salary. i thought this was huge. I think Bowman did well. Sharp was pretty much a non factor in the Stanley Cup finals. Daley can be a useful player for The Hawks next season. He actually had just 5 less points than Sharp last year.

Question is, is Sharp worth 5.9 per for experience and leadership? I watched the Chicago run and he is not the same Sharp of younger years.

Red Wings get a great deal with Nyquist

Wings, Nyquist agree to four-year deal

The Detroit Red Wings avoided a potential arbitration hearing with Gustav Nyquist and agreed to terms with him on a four-year, $19 million contract on Friday. The deal carries a cap hit of $4.75 million per season.Nyquist had 27 goals and 27 assists while skating in all 82 games for the Red Wings last season.

If you look at the Blackhawks roster, they will likely push for another Stanley Cup next year.

Yes, Brandon Saad is a big loss and Sharp's production isn't easily replaced. But I think that Anisimov might help out offensively and they're expecting Teuvo Teravainen & Marko Dano to continue their development also.

Where does Johns fit on their roster? Just because they have high hopes for him, doesn't mean that he could come in a take a spot out of camp. They wanted the re-assurance that if they couldn't come to terms with Oduya, they had a #3-4 guy ready to go. It would be tough to expect that out of Johns.

Sharp for Daley is a lateral move. Both players on the decline in their careers.

To me, the difference is how fast Johns comes to the NHL and how effective he is. If the Hawks go on another deep run in the playoffs, does anyone really care what they gave up to get Daley?

Tough to put that on Daley. He logged the most ice-time on the back end because they were such a poor defensive team.

He slots in perfectly as a partner with Hjalmarsson or even as a #5 with Trevor van Riemsdyk.

Dallas were the 6th best possession team in the league overall. Without Daley, that should improve. Their biggest problem was goaltending. Lehtonen became complete **** last year. Their defense may not look good on paper, but they suppress shots well.

Carolina has signed Noah Hanifin to his ELC today so he isn't going back to Boston College.

Wonder if he starts in the NHL or AHL this year?

Canes Sign Hanifin to Entry-Level Contract
Boston College product was the first defenseman taken in 2015 Draft

Ron Francis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has signed defenseman Noah Hanifin to a three-year, entry-level contract. The deal will pay Hanifin $832,500 on the NHL level or $70,000 on the American Hockey League (AHL) level through the 2017-18 season. Hanifin also receives a signing bonus of $277,500.

“Noah has had a great week here during our prospect development camp,” said Francis. “He is big, he can skate and he can move the puck. Noah fits the mold for the type of player and person we want in a Hurricanes uniform.”

I can see Sharp rebounding in Dallas. Last season, he was being utilised a lot more on the defensive side. Since Saad replaced him on the top line, I think they wanted to spread the offensive wealth. He's going to look much better with Spezza IMO.

Benn - Seguin

Sharp - Spezza

Too offensively-capable pairs.

I wouldn't say Chicago got fleeced (depending on how Daley pans out for them), but I definitely agree that this trade should put things in perspective for many bitter Leaf fans. I think we got a significantly better package for Kessel.

Sure he will score 40 goals...the real question is will he kill his coach while doing so?

I think that would be a safe bet to make that he has his best goal season of his career with the Pens.

Goal scoring his strength, and with his release it fools & beats goalies all the time.
