By me?

One.

Not sure what that has to do with anything though. Gio has been a terrific D-man for years now.

What kind of argument are you trying to make that Gio has been a top 5 D in the league if only been considered for 1 year? I can argue in Phaneuf's career he was looked at as a top 5 at least once maybe more? Sure Gio is a better player, but to hold any weight to the fact Gio was considered a top 5 in the league holds no water, when Phaneuf has done the same and likely more than once. Clearly you dislike Phaneuf; but you failed to show the ages of both of these D when their respective contracts expire.

I did not only consider one year. I said that it's been one year where I've considered him a top 5 D. Vastly different things.

Over the last 3-4 years, Gio has been one of the top 5 D-men. The last year or so, the sample size has grown enough that I give him full credit. Before this last season, I was amazed with how good he was (Norris caliber) but wanted to see more before I rated him that high.

Not sure what you are saying with the bolded. Phaneuf has never been close to as good a player as Gio is now. When he had his great offensive season, he was an awful defensive player.

The difference in age is of course a factor, but doesn't change the fact that Gio is a vastly better player.

according to who? Not including this last season Gio was never mentioned as a top 5 D in the NHL.

According to me, based on extensive watching and analytical evaluation. He's been one of the league's better possession D-men, a top offensive D-man while also playing a true shutdown role. Very, very few D-men have a better case than him over the last few years.

Gio was a Norris favorite before his injury the season before. I'm pretty sure that qualifies as being regarded as a top 5 D for the season.

That explains everything, and not in the least bit surprising. Carry on.

Ok?

If you want, I can add a complete description of his skill set, how he utilizes it and to what effect, and why that separates him from most D-men if you feel like discarding a statistical comparison?

ooh yes! i vote this :)

That greedy Franson deserves a small contract after always giving teams headaches every time he negotiates a contract. I'm sure he could have signed somewhere earlier but now that most teams have their roster set, he'll have no choice but to sign to a cheap contract b

Checking in after a while, so wanted to ask:

When are teams starting training camp? And how is the Leafs roster/line combination expected to look?

Been away from Toronto and hockey world, hence the questions.

Camp opens with physicals and weigh ins on the 18th in Halifax. Pre-Season starts on the 21st with split squad games against Ottawa.

As for lines, it's way to hard to predict.
