Goddamn NHL.com...
This is downright embarrassing for the league. I would expect this from an amateur website rather than from the league's official app.
I had no time to watch the Sharks @ Vegas game tonight, so I was following it via the scoreboard in the official NHL app.
First, throughout the game, the scoreboard lagged behind real time by some 10+ minutes of playing time. When there was intermission after the 2nd period, the scoreboard in the app was showing "10 minutes left in the 2nd period" (while pretending to be counting down seconds exactly...), with the wrong score, etc.
I had to go to the sportsnet.ca scoreboard to get the current score instead. (TSN.ca scoereboard was acting up for me as well!)
Then, in the 3rd period, things appeared to be back to normal, so I switched back to the scoreboard in the NHL app on the iPad. A mistake.
Can you believe that they gave the win in this game to Vegas ????!!!
No hallucination on my part, I assure you! Timo Meier's tying goal with 0.3 seconds left in regulation apparently didn't register with whoever is responsible for the NHL.com scoreboard. They were truly showing a 4-3 Vegas win as the
FINAL score, with the standings tab showing Tuesday's game in Dallas as Vegas's next game.
So, as a Kings fan, I cursed a bit for having received no help whatsoever from the Sharks, and stopped following hockey for the day.
But wait a minute... A bit later, a tweet from MoneyPuck.com popped up on my phone:
... saying that Vegas's chances to make the play-offs have now dropped to about 17%. I said, "Wait a sec! After just winning a game, how could Vegas's chances have
dropped?"
I studied the graphics in the MoneyPuck tweet, concluding that it must be satire, parody, or just an analysis of hypothetical "what coulda been" scenarios...
But a bit later, I found out the truth (the delicious truth). Alright – the Kings now only need a single point in their remaining 2 games, to clinch the play-offs, instead of 2 points.
It's not the first time that the NHL's official app ****ed up like this in a major way, but to do it in the thick of the play-offs race is, again, downright embarrassing for the league.
