The Stanley Cup
Ah, interesting and good to know. I never understood these hockey player card summaries before. I was lost when someone would post it. But now i think i understand finally. I'm guessing all the other percentages on the card (PK, G/60, finishing, etc.) are the same -- 0-100% percentage on the scale for where you stand against the rest of the league?
This 0-100% showing is much easier to understand where player A stands and performs relative to the rest of the league (compared to the raw WAR).

For more explanation on reading them.

Depends if you're in the camp that believes that by definition there are 64 Top 2 Dmen around the league or if players need to meet specific archetypes to qualify as a Top 2 Dman even if that creates a league wide shortage.

Either way, if you account for 7th Defensemen and injury call ups it should actually be higher than 67%.

The demand for talent is always greater than the available supply, and that's why stupid contracts exist. Even in a hard cap league with revenue split 50/50.

Calgary will have to move a contract. Tanev will start the season on IR but he'll be back November-ish. Monahan seems banged up but healthy enough to play?

It's gotta be Monahan, and Cgy will pay whatever cost to get rid of him and not think twice about it. They're obviously all in with what they currently have.

We'll see what the numbers look like, but getting Kadri seems like a good get. They they certainly got older getting Huberdeau and Kadri. Might be good for this year, but they may hurt in the long term.

Tkachuk and Gaudreau out Huberdeau, Weegar and Kadri in. Did they Flames actually get better??
Short term yes but they will have Huberdeau and Kadri locked in well past their prime. Brad T going for it, and I think it is the right move.

This will move Backlund to his proper #3 spot, and give the flames a great top 2.
again short term massive win for the flames...long term though could get ugly

wonder what the conditions on the first and what first rounder it is. If it is the Flames 2023 that is a win for the habs regardless if it is 25-32 range.

Obviously a win for the Habs, but it's not a loss for the Flames either necessarily. If you're the Flames, you trade Monahan + 1st for Kadri without question.

true, i could see it being a loss if the flames deal their 2025 first unprotected an it turns into a top 5 though

Oof, adding a first to ditch one year of Monahan's contract is brutal.

Price of clearing cap space. If the pick is in the 20s then it's not so bad (although there are some who are touting 2023 to be as deep as 2003). New Jersey ended up giving a late first to shed Vladimir Malakhov's contract. The pick eventually got sent to St. Louis who did well with David Perron. But the next ten guys taken after Perron: Brendan Smith, Nick Petrecki, Jim O'Brien, Nick Ross, T.J. Brennan, Brett MacLean, Taylor Ellington, Josh Godfrey, Tommy Cross, Joel Gistedt.

Montreal has deep pockets, so it's a decent gamble to essentially buy a lottery ticket. Although I'm still not exactly sure where the cap space is coming from (perhaps just Carey Price going on LTIR).

Edit: Looks like a conditional 2025 1st

Edit #2: Reading through the conditions reminds me that I didn't score as well on the SAT Verbal as I would have liked. TL;DR version: Montreal has the option to take Calgary's 2024 1st if it's #20-32. Otherwise it'd be one of Calgary or Florida's 1st in 2025. There's some goofy condition where the pick could be deferred until 2026 if the 2025 pick was 1st overall.

Monahan (1yr left) + 1st

for

32yo Kadri on a 7x7M contract

I certainly wouldn't call that a "without question" type move. In fact I think the Flames get hosed in that hypothetical trade.

That Kadri contract is now untradeable. It likely has negative value, and they're stuck with it for seven years.

depends what Kadri they get. He was elite last year, but was more middle of the road prior. $7M I think is more than fair, but that term could get ugly.

Flames have a short win now window in which everything and everyone should be available to go for it. Next they should dump Lucic in order to bring in Miller for a 1st + one of their top prospects. Yes Miller walks, but if they are going for it then f***ign go for it.

Sure, but they already knew they were going to be in a tough spot in 4 years or so anyway. Their whole team is on the older side. Not too dissimilar from Pittsburgh honestly. Kadri, Huberdeau, Backlund, Coleman, Toffoli, Tanev, and Markstrom are all over 30 or will turn 30 next season. It's a strong team for the next three years at least. The next GM will probably have to deal with the fallout, but I don't blame them for going for it. Treliving did the best he could to ice a competitive team in Calgary for the foreseeable future.

He just won a Stanley Cup, turns 32 before the season starts, and just signed his final contract.

I'm sure he'll be very motivated and hungry.

But they don't want to trade Kadri?

Obviously the Flames weren't thinking rebuild once Gaudreau left. At that point, you're all in on what you've got. Kadri is better than Monahan today, and the pick is unknown. It's a without question move if you're where Calgary is mentally.
