I don't hate what Montreal is doing, trading Weber for Dadonov instead of LTIR'ing him and using the money on a bigger name was rumored recently. Now they will likely suck this season, Dadonov will play a lot and maybe they can flip him for a pick at the deadline and they can add Wright this year and a likely high pick (maybe even one of the franchise changers) in next years draft and suddenly you have the potential for a lot of high end pieces under 24 in Suzuki, Caufield, Wright and the #1 in 2023. Much like the Kings about 15 years ago, Montreal has some nice proven young pieces that will continue to grow into very good NHL players while still being bad enough to add more impact youth (see 2007-2008 & 2008-2009 Kings). I think that is the best way to execute a rebuild.
As for Dadonov, he didn't want to get taxed insanely high playing for a terrible team in relative anonymity in Orange County but instead is going to get taxed insanely high playing for a terrible team under a microscope in Montreal. I'm sure he will love it.
