Oilers will still make the playoffs.

Their first priority is an upgrade in net . No CAP space. So moving Smith out plus alot more would be required. Halak, Quick, MAF and Price (salary retained) might be options.
Also rumors that they are eyeing help in the way of a left handed D. So, I think not making the playoffs is not an option and they will try to make changes sooner rather than later. just a matter of what pieces they determine expendable.

The Oilers will certainly try to change something. It might not work. They have zero games left against Seattle and only one game left with Arizona. Better teams have missed the playoffs even after trying to make upgrades, like LA in 2015.

I assume they'll opt for a coaching change first, which is the wrong move in my opinion. Their goaltending sub par and the defense is in need of better depth. The offense is better/deeper than in the past but it still flows to much through McDryvid.

Halak makes a lot of sense as a short term improvement. I read that if he plays 2 more game he gets a large bonus. So maybe able to get him cheaper right now. Koskinen is waiver fodder but maybe you can get the canucks to take him going the other way.

I'm not sure why Quick keeps getting mentioned as a trade candidate. If things continue as they are this year (i.e., him being by far the better goalie over Peterson; and the Kings in the playoff picture), the idea of trading Quick does not make sense. Blake & Co want to make the playoff this year -- not get into the lottery again. Quick presents the Kings with the best chance to do so.
Now if Peterson gets hot or the Kings tank hard (& are out of things by the TDL) then the idea seems plausible.

Top goals of offseason:
1) find long term answer in net
2) find room for youth forwards
3) Ensure #1 is done

Don't forget top-pairing LHD search/tryouts

I'm not sure Mikey is THE long term answer there and he seems to have plateaued a la Forbort

Vancouver is only 3 points behind Edmonton so I don't see that trade happening soon, if at all.

Giorgiev is the goalie that’s been rumored as a target for Edmonton. I could see the Rangers taking Smith back as a guy to inject some juice into the locker room.

Gross, but a pretty typical Calgary/Edmonton move, getting a budget 1B guy and praying and after 20 great games going 'he's the answer' only to subsequently watch him fall the f*** apart like every other 40-game ceiling guy

see also Brian Elliot, Big Save Dave, Philip Grubauer, etc.

Finally, we'll get the Sidney Crosby instead of the Dany Roussin

That may be the single worst pick Dave Taylor and Al Murray [the wise, the all knowing , look at how good at drafting I am] made together. Everyone , including central scouting knew he was a product of Sid, and shouldn't be drafted high at all. What did Murray do...drafted him with our 2nd round pick . Mason Raymond was picked next, he would've been a nice pick. Did pretty good with Vancouver for years.

What a first game by Rossi and Boldy. Boldy with game winner vs Bruins. 2 more prospects that we need to watch. Boldy looks like a vet out there already.
