Which GMs around the NHL do the really smart GMs have on speed dial?

Being a great scout versus GM was something DL talked about on his recent podcast appearance. The GM is really managing all the people underneath them, not just the players and prospects. You have to delegate well to be successful. If you come from an athlete to scouting background, it’s probably hard to pick up that experience.

I think Jarmo definitely cut his teeth and earned his position. But I also think JD coming back there helps him out the most.

He is very overrated. John Tortorella was the only good thing that happened to that team and made a group of mostly nobodies a perennial playoff team. They will be a bottom 5 team for the foreseeable future.
Jarmo also traded away Marchessault for nothing.

Had it not been for the GMing of Jarmo and Howson the Kings don't win any cups. Respect.

I think Hallinder was part of the Kapanen deal with the Leafs previously.

Whoa this is a trade

Patrick as the Vegas 1C will be an interesting storyline. Potentially shrewd move for the Knights. As for Philly, seems like a brutal move. They pay Ellis $36M when he’s 30-36 yo? He players going out aren’t a major hit, but at that money, you’re hamstrung a bit if Ellis doesn’t produce right away. And the preds continue to clear cap. If they lose a Duchene or RJ in the expansion draft, that’s a major turnover at the top for that team after Ellis and RV.

Good low key move by the Sharks.

Given Doug Wilson’s track record with goalie acquisitions, I wouldn’t bet on this one. Fans dump all over Bob Murray, but he might be the best GM in the state of CA if you set the bar low enough.

Sorry, I'm sure it's been said somewhere else, but didn't see it. What podcast was DL on?

Does it make the Flyers better now? 1 year left for both Giroux and Couturier. Probably have a difficult time moving Voracek. Gave Hayes that nuts contract. JVR still there. They're all 28-33 years old. The question for the Flyers is, do you at least try, or waste some time? Looks like they chose try.

So many rebuilds get screwed up and fail.

buffalo
AZ
Edmonton
Detroit hasn't been a playoff team since 2016
Vancouver
Ottawa

And the sharks are in for a world of hurt with all their long term contracts to guys over 30 or who are in their mid 30s.

A successful rebuild is no sure thing.

One of many shrewd moves by Vegas. They have a well defined philosophy and identity, and they stick with it.

They are going to have to start searching for a new #1 goalie very soon.

And if success means Cup, even fewer work. And if you're expecting multiple Cups, even fewer than that work. Like the Caps, I'm sure they were expecting more than 1, with maybe the best goal scorer in history on the team. Certainly 1 before as late as they finally got one, which was after a cap purge, with nobody necessarily expecting anything. That 1 is more than SJ has though. However, what SJ had been able to do up until a few years ago isn't easy to do. You don't see too many teams that competitive for that amount of time. But, no Cup, so ultimately irrelevant.

I don't feel that way at all. Seems like a very slapped together hodge podge of a roster. It's worked out for them so far, but I don't see much of an identity or philosophy behind it.

I also don't think Nolan will ever amount to much in the NHL.

The Athletic Hockey podcast earlier this week.

Agree they are trying, but I think they missed on Seth Jones and went with plan B. So would you rather spend big on a younger and by some opinion better player, or waste your powder on half measurses? This isn’t a hockey trade, they didn’t give up any players of bonafide value. It’s a cap dump they’re taking on. Ellis is worth around $4M at his current level, and nowhere close to $6M.

Another DL opinion was Vegas has broke the model on how to win year over year in the nhl. They’ve gone with a pure acquisition model post year one. Zero emphasis on drafting and development. Compared to Colorado who has built up the traditional way, it’s hard to argue that Vegas’s approach is worse.

In 2017, Vegas had three 1st rd picks, 6th, 13th, and 15th overall. They've now all been traded, with none of them making a difference on the ice for Vegas, and only one of them having played even a single game for the Knights.

If you can't do Plan A, but still want to try and compete, you have to move on to Plan B. Sure, you'd rather do A, but if everyone waited for their A option, nothing would ever happen. Trades are fun. The league needs more days like today.

How is it not a hockey trade? They traded two roster players, who would otherwise have played for them. Assuming Ladd has been traded, that's a cap dump.
