Over the years, when it comes to the TDL, Rutherford has struck 'early' rather than 'often'.
And reviewing how some of the new players are playing in their current environments, I can understand it. Lindholm and Kuzmenko got off to a good start with their new teams, but have been basically meh ever since.
Meantime Monahan is on the third line in Winnipeg, and has done virtually nothing since his arrival from the Habs. I guess they're expecting that once he gets acclimatized, his play will ramp up.
The fact is that it's tough for some players to transition to a new team and a new system after March 8th, when there's basically only a month left in the season. Seems to me that a lot of these TDL acquisitions fail to live up to expectations with the teams that acquired them. And they flushed valuable assets in form of picks or prospects to acquire them.
Brian Burke used to say that GM's make their worst mistakes at the TDL and on July 1st, UFA Day. And I believe it. On the other hand, if the guy you're acquiring comes in early like Lindholm and Zadorov, and get 35-40 games under their belts, it seems to make a world of difference.
So a lot of guys will probably end up moving at the March 8th deadline. But few of them will end up having much impact, if history is any guide.
