I don't blame Blake for going for it when they looked like they were turning the corner. It fooled most of us.

In hindsight...it's obvious to say they should have attempted to part with Kopitar and Doughty and proceed with a retool. Kopitar has literally fallen off a cliff the past 5 weeks. It's stunning to see. Likewise with Doughty. It's always a tough ask for players in their mid to late 30's carry a team in a key position (1C and 1D).

They would be in better shape without PLD, and Faber along with Durzi in their top 4.
We don't expect it with LA, but it's happened before with K. Hayes being a 1st rounder by Chicago then opting to go UFA and sign with NYR. Thrun passed on Anaheim to sign with SJ. Gauthier with Phi just weeks ago as well (not that he was headed to UFA for another 2 years in college). Would Faber have really passed on LA? Rumblings that he could have done that. So, even big markets or warm weather places are not immune to the NCAA free agent.

LA had Kopi and Danault at C. So I get why they went winger, but dealing a RHD, you want a premium position back unless the W is top level. Fiala had 85 points and plus 23 in Minny in his last season there. And was over a PPG with LA last season, though the +/- took a hit.

Plus how does last season change for LA without Fiala as Faber would at best have signed late in the season after the Frozen 4 final. And the 1st is still in Europe.
So, like you said, comes down to how they spend that $7 mill cap space they used on Fiala.

Honestly, LA was in the spot where the kids were not going to be good enough to help the older vets.
Kind of like Van pre lockout with the Twins not ready yet to help the WCE with legit secondary scoring.
It was really only a matter of time before various factors caught up with the Kings...A tougher schedule, where their goaltending turned back into a pumpkin..They knew this going into the season, and were legitimately shocked when it indeed happened.

The inevitable regression of Kopitar and Doughty...Its also a veteran squad.

Was/ is there enough of a push from their younger group to carry the team.?...No...They failed to draft enough elite talent to put them to the next level..They dont have any young quality thats close to being pre lockout Sedins..Like Detroit, they currently dont have a core that can morph into a contending team down the road.

Not that long ago, there were a number of posters here that were claiming that the Kings rebuild had superseded our own..Not even close.

If Faber wouldn't sign that would be one thing but it was a poor value trade.

If Faber wouldn't sign, how was that a poor value trade? They were acquiring a 26 year old dynamic winger coming off a 33 goal 85 point season. Kings paid a steep price and as good as Faber was as a prospect these types of prospects don't get you say a top 3 pick.

The Kings are an example of how a rebuild can go wrong. Byfield's emergence helps a bit but there was a time when it looked like they got very little out of their high picks. It's kind of like the Rangers with Lafreniere and Kakko. You're relying on your bluechip prospects to contribute quickly and when they don't it leaves a massive hole.

For this storyline about top picks let's say top 10 need to contribute right out of the gate for a team to remain competitive and Contender like outside of the generational handful how many actually do it?

If I find some time somewhere in Another Universe it might look this up because it seems like this is a falsehood that has just been repeated and repeated and repeated and the actual percentage of it coming true seems like a crock

“You make a deal for Lindholm and bring back (Andrei) Kuzmenko, you’re trying to rebuild on the fly,” said Conroy of an addition that has also excited the local fans.

“We’ve added some assets.

“You’re rebuilding, but you want to be competitive and a good team because that’s how the Zarys, and the Pospisils, and all the young guys become better, in my mind.

“You’re doing this retool on the fly and that’s how we’re going to become better.”

Sounds a bit like Linden.

Panthers are rolling. Only a matter of time before they catch Boston for the Division lead
Oh yay…….just noodling around and saw the Panthers and Canucks are the furthest apart, Tampa and the Canucks are second and the Bruins and Canucks are third……if they do make a run to the finals it is going to be brutal If any of those three come through the East…

Fiala is a black hole in the playoffs and his performance that year was a complete aberration from his career and was the result of playing with Kaprizov.

I went back to look how big a deal the signing issue was and I don't know if it was a big thing or not but sure that would affect the trade value a bit but the point is that Fiala might be desirable in fantasy hockey leagues just not the NHL.

Man Pittsburg looks done wonder what happens there.

If you are Sid and you finish your contract in 2025, then what? 38 and if you want to keep playing, not playing for a shot at the cup really in Pitt. Would he even consider moving on? There is this bit of mystique to remain with 1 club, but in the NFL, Peyton and Brady left and won with their new team.

I can see him signing with Colorado to play with Mackinnon

Agree wholeheartedly. Which is exactly why you shouldn’t puss out drafting the BPA even if he’s from….America?

Fiala seems tempermental.

But he was absolutely electric in the play-in against us during the Covid year which was before Kaprizov joined the league.

He was also really dangerous against Edmonton in one of the last year playoff series'.

I hope CBJ ownership looks at the standings and says “Who’s in 1st place? Let’s get the architects of that team!” and they end up with Jim Benning and John Weisbrod.
I don't. I admit I have sympathy for that market. It seems one that has some really solid potential, but has been ravaged by poor management and bad luck. I would like to see the Blue Jackets succeed as I'm very curious what that market is really made of.

11 years (+2 days) in charge. 6 missed playoffs...4 in a row to end his tenure. 1 playoff round victory. Benning-esque.

Now if they get a couple good people in and turn it around he will still get credit for building the foundation - or getting a bunch of materials and leavimg them in piles on the job site atleast
