Cap won't be going up. Wouldn't shock me if it shrunk. They're roster cap will be a total disaster in a few years, but you have to keep them together. Especially when you could win another few Cups in the next couple years.

Next year's cap hits:
Toews: 10.5M
Kane: 10.5
Seabrook: 6.85
Crawford: 6.0
Keith: 5.5
Hossa: 5.275
Anisimov: 4.55
Hjalmarsson: 4.1

Looks like Lombardi isn't the only GM who overpays to keep his Cup winning team together, but hey, at least we haven't seen a similar exodus of talent departing the the Kings. Imagine the Kings losing their version of Saad, who I'd say would be Tyler Toffoli. That would be a huge blow, and I think the Hawks will be feeling that departure over the next couple of years.

Full NMC through the first six years is disgusting.

The Hawks had to keep Seabrook/Toews/Kane, they have no one even remotely close to replace those guys. Eight years is tough to deal with.

Contract term will be a battle next CBA, GM's will want shorter contracts.

THe Zajac to LEafs rumor is picking up steam. I like Zajac, and at first thought he's 30 and why a rebuilding team would want to trade for him? But, he's got a good deal (5 more years at 5.75) and the Leafs have been trying to move problem child Kadri for a couple years now. Kadri , IMO, is not a #1 C and moving him out and Zajac in would give the Leafs a number 1C until their prospects are ready to move up. He's a hard working player and fairly well rounded , and would be more the kind of player Babcock would want rather than Kadri. And he could drop to the #2 slot down the road when Nylander takes over at #1.

And with both Chara and Seidenberg out, will he BRuins have to trade for a defenseman?

I like Saad, but I'd disagree. I think Marko Dano will turn out to be a better player that Saad. And he's only 20, he'll be skating on the top line with Toewes and Hossa and over the next couple years and beyond, I think he'll be a great asset.

also, they couldn't keep Saad and sign Seabrook

A lot of teams, including the Kings, with the CAP on a downward path, will be faced with similar decisions. Kopi and 6 other contracts expiring this year and 5 more including Pearson, Toffoli and King expiring next year.

Glad Dean didn't budge on Sekera's NTC despite pressure to get him signed (considering what he have up to acquire him). Otherwise it would open the door for other players to demand it.

I don't like what I just saw on reddit about Doughty.

link?

by the way, for all those saying that this seabrook extension is a necessary evil from the cap - seabrook isn't really as good as people think he is lately, literally the only reason to give him another contract is because (correct me if I'm way off here) Chicago has dick all for young blueliners to come fill that void. the guy was practically statistically equivalent to AMart last year, if that tells you anything.

Montreal waived Bud Holloway in order to reassign him to the minors. Can we conjure up that old discussion where some illogical fans were up in a frenzy that the Kings never gave this future hall of famer an opportunity to play in the NHL?

CHI had no choice, because it has continued to trade away the young D prospects as you mentioned.

they won the SC this summer basically playing with 4 D. take Seabs out that rotation and then what?

they had no choice but to resign him, in order to keep some resemblance of a solid D corp. VanR is going to be solid, but he's still young. Rundblad is very inconsistent and at times his hockey IQ seems to be questionable. Rosival is still playing despite being killed years ago by Brown. getting Daley from DAL was a significant pick up for them to augment what they have. the depth at D for CHI is going to most likely be a concern moving forward once again.

they replaced oduya with daley, which is kind of a wash - neither one is that great.

the hawks pigeonholed themselves in this position by giving away all their D prospects, or just not developing them enough in the first place.

this is where i think we're relatively spoiled, look how many young homegrown guys on the blueline alone we've had in our cup runs. if you don't have that type of talent coming out of the pipeline, you're forced to overpay aging vets by millions (plus NTCs) - there's no leverage because there's no immediate replacement, and those guys and their agents know it.

we could have been in a very similar situation with guys like Scuderi and Mitchell if we didn't have young guys beating the door down to come get a roster spot.

Bud and Porky are the future, Dean needs to bend to their demands and get them to LA asap. they are the answer to the scoring woes in LA

And I don't like what I had for dinner last night on my cruise, I ordered steak but I think I got owl instead.

Anyway, my post here is about as relevant as yours is to the discussion, given that you really didn't say anything.

i agree. it goes back to Dean's insistence of building from the goal out and going heavy on D years ago. personally, i think the D prospects coming in the next 2 to 5 years are going to possibly raise the bar back to the 2012 effort.
