Weird seeing stars playing coming through for other teams
George Steinbrenner called Reggie Jackson Mr. October and Dave Winfield Mr. May. One dominated the playoffs while one dominated the beginning of the regular season. I'll let you guess what he would call the Mitch and Matty.

Is it revisionism if you argued we’d regret losing Hyman when we did? To me he was the casualty of Dubas over paying the RFA’s, shave a little off those contracts, suddenly you can keep a heart and soul Hyman.

Its not revisionist history, if you were one of those screaming for Dubas to be fired, and argued and took the position at the time that Hyman should be re-signed, :wg:

That just makes one look brilliant in hindsight and Leafs actual GM clueless.

But you're not wrong that giving a player like Marner his UFA rate (2nd contract) for his RFA years played a big part as Dubas badly overspent on the core 4. That example is made easily when you just take Braydon Point and Mitch Marner's 2nd contracts as comparison coming off similar contract year seasons.

Tampa Bay GM signed Brayden Point to a 3 year bridge deal coming off a 41 goal 92 point season to a 3 year $6.75 mil contract.

While a clueless Dubas gave Marner a 6 year ( 4 of which was RFA years) a contract at $10.9 mil AAV. That was a $4.15 mil of Hyman's $5 mil potential re-signing right there.,

Not only did that cost the Leafs a key player like Hyman it also cost the Leafs in terms of Cup competitiveness as Point (much like Hyman is doing now) would lead the playoffs in scoring with 14 goals in 2020 and 2021 on the way to 2 X Stanley Cups for the Lightning, While Point produced 30 goals 31 assists for 61 points on that contract. Marner can't match those totals his entire career.

Leafs Nation sure is feeling the impact of a past incompetent GM and doing it so as we Leaf Nation are forced to live vicariously through his mistakes watching Hyman tear up NHL playoff scoring with 12 goals in 13 playoff games leading Oilers deep into the playoffs.

Point signed that contract, as he wanted to stay with Tampa, and that's all the cap space they had left. I agree Marner was overpaid, but Point was also drastically underpaid due to nothing more to give him. Point's next contract of $9.5 million, is probably where both of them should have been.

The cap hit wasn’t the concern with Hyman, IIRC, it was the term.

And it was lauded as a risky contract at the time. Hyman’s work ethic and ability to grind were well noted but nobody could have predicted this large jump in offensive production with the Oilers, which is a large byproduct of playing with McDavid and their system.

It's all Hyman's fault he wanted to be a Leafs player for the rest of his life.

He should have just taken the short term cheap-o deal Dubas offered him. Fans got it all wrong. It's not Dubas' fault that Hyman is gone.

It's Hyman's fault for not being recognized as the talent fans knew he was all along.

The whole thing is the three stooges fault. Shanny Dubbie and Keefe. 2 down

Yep, some here are re-writing history for some reason.

Also forced Dubas to trade a first (Jarvis) to dump Marleau. What a clown.

I am honestly so flabbergasted by this trade. I honestly dont understand Chicago's logic in it at all, to do it right now.

Have to think there is something more to it. Otherwise, it's seems completely random.

Edit: my guess is that Lou needs the second round pick for a deal he is cooking.
