People found the flat cap an obstacle, but I saw it as the league not having enough free space to offset the growth in matthews, marner and nylanders game over that span. Even if the offence isn't the greatest at times from matthews and marner in the playoffs, their 2-way game is selke worthy. I repeat, there was not enough cap space league wide to offset the growth in our 3 best players.

Then you had the easy division during covid.

No matter what cheat code angle you take, Dubas can't get it done. Is it the core's fault, or the GM's?

GM and it's not debatable. This place doesn't know how lucky it is to have our core.

Realistically. How many top 10 all time leafs do we have on our team right now?

Matthews.
Sundin
Marner?
Sittler/keon

Nylander

Rielly is probably top 5 all time D?
Salming
Horton

Who else before Rielly

Matthews. Marner
Tavares. Nylander

Rielly is a good enough core.

Two. At most.

Rielly is a good enough core.

Ignoring the current roster, the TML top-ten looks something like this:

Syl Apps
Charlie Conacher
Frank Mahovlich
Tim Horton
Borje Salming
Ted Kennedy
Dave Keon
Busher Jackson
Turk Broda
Johnny Bower

Mats Sundin and King Clancy might make their way in, but I'm not sure who I would bump to make room.

Matthews would make that list right now, but barely.

Marner has a lot of work to do, but is on track to make the list if he re-signs. His current career doesn't look much different than Joe Primeau right now.

Nylander is highly unlikely. He would have to put up 4 or 5 seasons better than anything he has done so far. He's doing that this year, but he'd need to repeat it several times.

Rielly is in the same boat as Nylander.

I was separating D.

Marner is 7th in all time leafs scoring. It’s hard to compare original 6 as they would have cups.

But stats wise realistically If Willy stays they could end up 1 2 3 in all time leafs scoring.

Rielly would be 2nd after salming I think. He wouldn’t pass Borje

Can only hope that our current core replicates what Sundin, Sittler and Salming turned out to be (HHOFers) while avoiding what they were unfortunately unable to do on a team level (win a SC).

Raw point totals aren’t necessarily indicative of greatness. All these current players are playing in a high scoring era, so their point totals are higher.

Somebody like Charlie Conacher may only have 324 career leaf points, but that was good enough to lead the league in points twice and goals five times. Nylander has far more points, but has yet to land in the top-10 in any significant offensive category.

Yes it’s very hard to seperate eras.

But out of curiosity. He led the league in goals 5 times as a leaf?

Wouldn’t that be more widely known? I am a big enough hockey fan since the 80s and I have no real idea who he is

Yes, I was only referring to what he did as a leaf.

He led the league in goals as a leaf in 1931, 1932, 1934, 1935, and 1936.

He was also one of the original power forwards, as well as the team’s primary enforcer, so his body broke down fast. He didn’t have much left by his late 20s.

Comparing Marner to Joe Primeau is all I needed to see that this is post is trash.

That’s amazing. He Never comes up on broadcasts. Matthews led the league twice. You never hear that we have a 5 time “rocket” winner. Ever.

for me…. And I’m far from a history buff. I think of hockey pre and post expansion in terms of rankings for points. don’t really consider the 30s 40s players because it’s just too difficult.

It’s probably the entirely wrong but for me I compare our current crop to sundin sittler Clark salming

A good list, here is another, pre current team: Top 30 greatest Toronto Maple Leafs of all time

I liked Ellis, played a simple game, and did his job.

And of course like the defenseman they had play center.

You lost me not including Sundin

A lot of the older generations go overlooked, underrated, and underappreciated, I will admit
And I don't mean to knock any of the guys on the list, all fantastic players

But Busher Jackson over Sundin?

It seems accepted The Big M is in the Top 10, but I'm not sure I buy him over Sundin even.

Now it is a long time ago, but I just remember his big shot ... and I'm not sure his overall game was any better than Vaive. But I was just a kid so ...

Sundin’s best seasons as a Leaf were 4th and 7th in league scoring. He was also 2nd, 8th and 10th in goals.

Mahovlich was 3rd, 4th and 5th in points, as well as 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 3rd and 6th in goals. He did that playing for Punch Imlach, who was the only coach in the league to not use powerplay units. Then add in the 4 Stanley Cups….

Just look at Jackson’s points and all-star voting record. 4 times among the top-5 scorers, including a 1st in the league. 4 times voted the best left winger in hockey.

Yeah, most my memory was after his best seasons, leading up to his trade.
After his trade he continued to be very good on two different teams, but that doesn't impact his time with the Leafs.
Leafs were a powerhouse, and really haven't been that since.

They've been good, but never close to best since 1967.

This where comparing eras becomes tricky.
Jackson's shorter, tumultuous tenure as a Leaf saw him near the top of the League, but his production wasn't as spectacular, and Sundin brought so much more on top of the scoring.

I just think it's a major oversight to not include the highest scoring Maple Leaf of all-time (1st in G, Pts, PPG, GWG, 2nd in A, 3rd in SHG) in a list of top Maple Leafs

Plus, I can't imagine Marner and Matthews' all-star voting record and top-of-the-league finishes would carry as much weight as Jackson's is (though, you did say ignoring current roster)

6 point night for Letang. Wow.

Maybe no points from Crosby while they put up 7 is almost just as surprising
