I really want to stoke the fire on Winnipeg because their fans are pompous douchebags and overall extremely unlikeable. But… I’m trying to be a better person. At least for today.
Hey at least they’re not as delusional as a Canucks fan who I saw propose a trade of Ek, Yurov, and Ohgren for Pettersson

To be completely fair though, almost everyone said that the value wasn’t close and we’d be unlikely to even move Ek in a 1 for 1.

What on earth… That is outrageous!

We wouldn’t move Ek in a 1-for-1? Is that because we don’t have the cap?

Presumably Pettersson's next cap hit is going to be ~6-7m higher than Ek's.

Is the difference between Ek and Pettersson enough to justify that?

And that's assuming he would even want to sign long term here, given the state of the team.

The Arizona Coyotes have placed forward Adam Ruzicka on unconditional waivers to terminate his contract after a questionable social media post.

Ruzicka posted a video on his Instagram story that showed his face before turning to a credit card and a white powder that appeared to be cocaine, the Associated Press reported Friday. While the post has been deleted, screen recordings of the video continue to circulate.

I thought this headline on NHL.com was pretty funny
"NHL Trade Buzz: Bruins seek ‘stiff defender,’ help on offense"

Merrill seems to be pretty stiff and rigid, could we just send him over for a bag of pucks?

It's interesting, reading the Kings forum, it seems Fiala is trying to "play" his way out of LA.

The guy who had a three point night last night, leading the team to a big win over VAN?
The guy who leads the team in points?
The guy who is doing this while making 7.875M, while PLD makes 8.5M, and Doughty 11M?

Tough crowd.

I mean, given their reasoning, I see it.
"Yeah, if you look at the points, he looks like a #1 super star but if you look beyond just the points, he's merely a good player"

So I decided to do some digging.
While he does have the most points on the team (at the time of this writing), he also has one of the lowest +/- at -5, on the team. For all his scoring, when he's on the ice they're letting up even more goals.

While +/- isn't a great indicator of play, it's pretty telling that he's a minus when most of the team is neutral or positive.

It's also interesting they speculate (maybe not the right word?) that he does best with either younger players who have to conform to his play, or defensively minded forwards that can make up for his ill-timed gaffs and that's why he did so well with Freddy.

And I should be clear, they are not happy with DD or PLD.

Hello boys, I'm here to ask about Zach Parise. I wasn't exactly following it closely when you bought out him and Suter, but I got the impression he was a bit banged up and maybe on the way out. Since he joined the Avalanche he's obviously not been playing top line minutes, but he's been relentless and by all accounts been a very useful veteran, professional influence. He's even started getting (second unit) powerplay time.

Why did you buy him out? Was it purely money related?

he looked done, frankly. His back was in terrible shape, and he could barely skate for a couple of years. There was also the thought that he and Suter commanded too much attention in the dressing room, and that MN wanted a new start.

Remember, MN expected him to be a 1st line wing, not a bottom six grinder with mediocre speed and size.

Guerin wanted to build his own country club environment

I thought I remembered something about an injury. I also don't think I realised that deal was quite as long as it was. Definitely seems like it was worth getting out of then.

Understandable. Can't have lifers propping up the bar and stealing all the good tables.

Cap recapture is literally the main reason both were bought out, the league gave them each the ability to kill the franchise whenever they wanted. Too much employee power for two guys who had already broken trust with their coaches when they went out and hired Oates to independently coach the PP without clearing it through management.

Parise had the injury issues but was still one of our three best goal scorers at the time of buyout, but they were expecting each of them to be put in smaller roles on the team, and there were concerns over how they would take that, again it was a power dynamic issue and the league had already given Parise and Suter a special recourse tool if they wanted to use it.

Still such an absurd ruling and response by the NHL, they literally forced the issue, and the end result worked entirely in the players favor as they each ended up signing additional contracts and playing til the end anyway (minus a couple months for Parise.)

Unironically a big part of it was legitimately Guerin trying to have a changing of the guard, we use "country club" colloquially here, the gyst is that it was a bunch of guys seemingly content in riding off into the sunset, not really focused on winning necessarily. Suter and Parise basically ran the locker room here and there were always rumblings or rumors of rifts between some veterans and some young players while they were here. Guerin didn't like it and wanted a change.

He was bought out because it provided the most certainty in regards to the cap, when/if there would be penalties in some form, etc. Trading him risked recapture, although the rule they implemented where the penalty couldn't be more than the AAV of the contract helped to not have (potentially) 19M in dead cap in one season (per player), there was still the question about when that would come into play, and I think they felt more comfortable getting that out of the way right away so they could build to something when it was gone.

I'd venture to guess that player performance was a pretty small part of it. Parise, when healthy, was still a serviceable bottom six winger for sure. Suter was still a top 4 D. So it's not like they didn't have a place on the ice. Again, it was the locker room and culture that Guerin felt was the issue. The buyout was just the least evil of all the options to move them.

He was an entitled asshole and a bully as far as I know.

Nice range of responses. I can only say good things so far, but as a midseason veteran signing on league minimum it would be pretty hard to say anything bad. I suppose knowing it's your last year and you're on a contender is a bit of a motivator.

Anytime I think of Parise, I immediately think of Adam Oates. That was just a stupid, stupid move on Parise's part, and that's when I started to give him the side-eye.

Wish I could like this more than once.

Imagine what Bedard and company will do to Mn 5 years from now.
Only if that company comes with the rest of a first line, a 2nd 3rd and 4th lines, a defense and a goalie. Then yeah.

As fans, we all knew that it was highly unlikely that those guys would play out the full contract. Especially after the league punished Liepold with cap re-capture after the fact. Honestly, by the time of the buy outs, it was time for them to go. Good for Parise for finding a way to heal and take one more cup run. He looked used up here.
