Yea, they had joined in 79-80 with the other three teams from the WHA. They had also won the Avro Cup more than once, so I am not sure where all their good players went, but they were back to around .500 the following season.
Bobby Hull retired, Anders Hedberg went to the Rangers, and Kent Nilsson went to Calgary.

If I recall correctly, everyone except Gretzky had to go to whichever team held their NHL rights, or got put in a draft, or something along those lines.

As part of the agreement, the NHL treated the WHA teams' arrival as an expansion rather than an outright merger. The former WHA clubs were stripped of most of their players, and NHL teams were given the right to reclaim players from the WHA clubs without compensation. As a concession for being stripped of most of their players, the former WHA clubs were permitted to keep two goaltenders and two skaters. The four former WHA teams were also placed at the end of the draft order for the 1979 NHL Entry Draft, as opposed to previous and future NHL expansion teams, which had been placed at or very near the front of the draft order.
Wayne Gretzky was a special case - although no team held his NHL rights, under existing rules he would have been removed from the Oilers and placed into the NHL Entry Draft. However, Gretzky had been signed by Oilers owner Peter Pocklington to a personal services contract instead of a standard player contract. Confronted with the probability of being drafted first overall by the last place Colorado Rockies, Gretzky refused to void his contract with Pocklington. After deliberation, the Oilers were allowed to keep Gretzky as one of their priority selections, and agreed to choose last in each round of the 1979 NHL Entry Draft as further compensation.
Detroit also agreed to not claim Gordie Howe and allowed him to remain with the Hartford Whalers.

I believe they were able to keep 2 and a goalie? IIRC

Edit: 2 goalies.

@sportsnet

Florida Panthers star defenceman Aaron Ekblad was stretchered off the ice after suffering an apparent leg injury during the second period of the team's matchup with the Dallas Stars on Sunday.

After a hot start Boston has been a .500 for the past 20 games.

Phili and the rangers haven't been able to capitalize. Phili are nose diving and the rangers have big wins but are barely playing over.500 themselves.
