They're going to get rid of blackouts eventually but it'll be just like the MLS/Apple deal. Pay for Apple TV and pay a subscription for the season. Except it will be a lot more expensive than MLS/Apple deal. And it won't come for another decade.

Yeah, it's clearly paying Bally tons.

Look, NHL, your model is shitty, and it's gonna get shittier. This either/or model of twisting people's arms to pay cable companies or get nothing is obviously in a decaying orbit.

You want to give the $20 subscription away for $0.30 if it's bundled with DisneyPlus or whatever to make up the volume? Fine. But if you don't make the standalone option available, you're leaving money on the table. And for God's sake, get rid of the f***ing blackout nonsense.

Just because Bally’s can’t run their business doesn’t mean there isn’t more money available to the NHL with the current model than a streaming service model.

They're still that salty about Aho and KK? :sarcasm:
I dont know about salty but they are still traumatized.

Just because an ancient business model worked at some point in time doesnt mean they should try and continue it when its failed in multiple places for multiple companies.

I'm sure a more competent set of crooks can f*** fans out of all kinds of money, sure. I'd just rather they do something that fans actually want, that could still make them money.

Fans: "Get rid of blackout restrictions"
NHL: "But then you won't go to as many games"
Fans: "I'm watching on TV because I can't afford to go (or live to far away)"
NHL: "Then get the $250/month plan that gives you access to this one f***ing channel you need deep in the sports package to be able to watch them"

...this is why VPN exists

To be clear, I'd love a situation like you are describing. I was just responding to the "why" it isn't in place. The only logical answer is that the NHL just wants their games on TV and they want the most money for the rights to those broadcasts. If they thought (and you know they have run the numbers) that they could make more money by keeping their own rights and creating a streaming service, they'd have done that. I just don't believe that the fourth most popular pro league in the States can support a subscription service that is more lucrative than what they can weasel out of the cable companies on a per subscriber model like they have now.

one of the local TV Stations should use one of their HD channels to broadcast the Canes Game, then sell the rights to ESPN to broadcast The games nationwide. That would make local games free, but Those out of the area, like me would still get to watch the games through ESPN sports. But you would also have to pay a small fee to watch away games no simulcast

Wait… I thought he was a Canes legend

He is. Like Slenderman or the Boogeyman. Stories you tell younger generations to scare them into not making stupid decisions.

”And he was paid $35 million for half a season of work. If you listen closely at night, you can still hear him passing up shooting opportunities.”

So it's been a long long term problem..
And then the real problem passing up GOOD shooting opportunities in favor of a low percentage pass to an EN goal chance.. (Which if the pass completes is late or gets fanned.)

I was watching the game with my wife since she's a Caps fan. She hated Semin. She was looking away when it happened, and my mouth was full, but I was so excited to point out Semin being there to her. I still like him even after how things ended.

Oh really?

His wife's distaste for him is becoming more obvious...
