Good for Todd. Detroit is where he started his NHL coaching career.

His merits as a coach have been debated around here, it will be interesting to see if he's able to improve the Red Wings.

Detroit is currently 28th in the league and stuck in a cycle of losing. No where to go but up.
He will get the organised and playing structured hockey. The roster also lacks a Kopitar or Doughty to ride so he shouldn’t overplay veterans (you’d think).

Decent guy, wish him well. I’d be interested in how long his deal is though but at least it means,,presumably, he’s off the LA books.

Outside of Buffalo, there's an argument to be made Detroit is the worst team in the league to be a fan of.

Bad team. No real hope for the future. Headed nowhere. Medicore prospect pool.

Tmac probably gonna help them win just enough games to prevent them from getting a top 5 pick.

Good for McLellan. I got frustrated with his decisions, but I'm still unsure how much of it was him versus a directive from Blake/Robitaille of just trying to make the playoffs. I generally liked his points when talking about coaching, and how things have changed since he became an assistant.

Without the expectations of making the playoffs and with some young players to guide, it should be a good situation for him.

The big difference is I doubt they'll be playing 1-3-1 and it will continue to expose our front office thinking as fraudulent when detroit makes a late push for the playoffs and challenges to win a round behind Talbot

He's bringing Trent Yawney with him, so their pp should improve as well.

Yawney was responsible for the PK, not the PP.

At exit meetings, Blake extolled the Kings’ defensive excellence and throughout the season the Kings’ leap from 24th to second in the NHL was a significant boost to a team that was offensively challenged from December onward.

Yawney ran the Kings’ penalty kill and back end, areas that could transfer over to Smith if he were to be retained.

Yeah I think that's how it works, the contract has to be bought out or voided before signing a new deal elsewhere. He'll still probably end up with a few mil from LA for doing nothing.

I stand corrected.:thumbu:

Who ran the pp last year then?

So they are renting the Koala trying him out and will decide on an extension? I didnt see any contract info - assuming just finishing off his LAK contract.
