Yea I think you got it. Lots of talent/skill with better stick flex while stopping goalie equipment from getting bigger. Though goalies with size are more popular now.
But mostly lots of powerplays I think is the biggest reason.
Also defenders had to stop doing certain things to clear the front of the net because they were getting penalized for it.
Offensive dmen were less of a thing in the past also and they lead to more odd man rushes against.
I spoke to a skills coach a season or two ago who suggested that goalies may have to start getting smaller in order to make more accurate reads on puck location coming off the stick because the slapshot is dying and stick technology allows players to hide the release point more.

No idea if it's true or not but... it was an interesting conversation.

That is interesting. And maybe the reason Kings jumped at the chance to take Carter George earlier in the draft.

That's what Quick's early strengths were, and what I think guys like Saros and Wolf are doing at a higher level than bigger goalies

Who can forget Quick going all crab and looking thru people's legs to get the puck and then it sticking to him like glue, that's how he kept the puck out of the net and it was still effective in the playoffs because he rarely left rebounds around for people to bang away at

Like you say I don't know how true it is but it's one reason I got a little miffed at people (not here) overlooking guys Wolf's size

I also remember Quick complaining the least about pad size reductions. I think he already used smaller pads.

He has no flaws to his game, he's not going to be McDavid or Bedard level, but he looks like a more offensively gifted Toews, with all his intangibles. This will be a massive homerun for the Guppies. 🤮
Dude is a goal scoring machine.. everywhere he's been, its close to 1 goal per game avg - even this season in a 3 game sample :) This is a 1C that everyone will drool over for many years to come assuming he stays healthy.
