I'd add that the 10 year deferral payout period Vatrano took is for state tax reasons. A State can't go after deferred compensation if you have left that state and take the payments out over 10 years. So California can't go after that money if he moves to say Florida that has no state income tax. So it wouldn't have worked tax-wise if it was less than 10.
Good point, and it highlights that this sort of arrangement is very specific to the player and his situation. It won't be an across the board thing. For instance, while deferred salary might be an option for Tavares, the fact that he would receive deferred money in Canada, at our lovely tax rates, doesn't do him much good.

What the hell happened to the rangers?
I just got a chuckle out of a rather interesting outlier; the Rangers actually are 10th in wins; the only reason they're as far down in the standings as they are is because a bunch of teams down there have a bunch of OT losses.

I'm guessing it ain't great for JT at all. If he has this big successful real estate portfolio I've read about here he's much better off pumping money into that (today) than waiting 10 years for a pension.

I'm hoping it's more of a 'this is how things are going to go' situation. If deferred monies is part of that it's likely less extreme than Vatrano though.

Deferred money (I think) doesn’t have to be in a pension like the Allan Walsh way

Jt could sign a deal like Vatrano and get SB on July 1 the year his contract ends.

I’m assuming a 35 year old doesn’t get full SB so really it would be getting your pay in one lump sum on July 1 instead of sept—aprkl

The East Wild Card race could be fun this season.

Columbus is holding on to 8th right now.. wouldn’t mind seeing them sneak in
That's a surprise, though they've had a decent last ten games. They are fourth in PCT, but they ARE right in the thick of things.

I'd say technically Ottawa is in the first wild card position in the East, give points percentage, with Boston in second Tampa is shown as a wild card as they are one point down on Boston, but have played FIVE less games.

Ottawa 0.526
Boston at 0.523
Montreal 0.513
Columbus 0.512
Pittsburgh 0.500
Detroit 0.500
Philly 0.476
NYR 0.475
NYI 0.463
Buffalo 0.427

I'd say only Buffalo and NYI are truly out of it, but I don't think Philly or Detroit have any chance realistically. Pittsburgh seems doubtful, but Crosby.

I'm struggling to decide which is more surprising -- the Capitals right at the top of the conference, or the Rangers near the bottom. I have to go with the latter considering I thought heading into the season the Rangers had the tools (on paper) to be a Cup contender.

Wild Card is definitely going to be intriguing. I'd much rather see the Canadiens, Senators or Red Wings in the playoffs over the Blue Jackets and Penguins. Although this year I can get behind the Blue Jackets making it in after what transpired in the summer.

Both those latter teams in the position they are in thanks to being propped up with the amount of OTL points they have accumulated. The same way the Flames and Canucks have been propped up on the other side.
