Zito is a really good GM. He was also fortunate with the Tkachuk situation, he demanded out of Calgary, it's not everyday a superstar tells their team he wants out and gives X destination lists. Good trade, but also good luck that Tkachuk was disgruntled in Calgary.

I think Florida is better today than they were a few days ago, but I also think they paid way too much for Jones. Knight was probably their 1G for the future after Bob, that + a first is a hefty price to pay for a nearly 31 year old 4D, who's signed for 7M until he's 35.

Ballsy move by Zito, if they repeat then he's a genius. If they come up short, it will be one of the worst trades they made. I just feel like they could've got a lot more for the assets they sent out. As an Atlantic rival I'm kinda happy because they don't have a whole lot of cap/assets to acquire other meaningful players, so this is likely what their team looks like going into the playoffs.

I think we have a lot more room to improve than them and we still have some good trade chips.
I just dont think goalies have that much value. Theres no guarantee Knight will become a starter, and if he does, that could still be several years out. Like look at someone like Blackwood. He looked great to start his NHL career, trended down hill for several seasons, and just now has established himself at the age of 28.

Also a goalie is probably the easiest position to find for a plug and play. Lankenin almost went without a contract this summer and now hes vans starter. We got Stolarz from FA for cheap. Blackwood didnt cost much to acquire, or Thompson etc etc.

Florida would know Knight the best, and to me it seems like they dont think he will be fully ready to take the reins in the next 2 years or so. Things havent gone perfectly for him since signing that deal off his ELC. You also have to remember, when hes an RFA hes going to have a QO of 4.5m. Thats practically starter money, and if hes not a starter by the end of next season its highly possible Florida would have just let him walk anyways because they wouldnt have that type of money for a non-1A.

Wish we would make shrewd moves like this and take some chances (and not a 1 year rental type of chance).

Most “Cinderella stories” lose in the cup final. Montreal/early Vegas/anaheim/carolina etc all made it to the final

Those were already playoff bubble quality teams that went on a run. Their playoff success was their Cinderella story. Columbus on the other hand was basically unanimously expected to be a bottom feeder this season. Making the playoffs at all is their Cinderella story imo, if it happens.

And the shoe drops ...

Florida Panthers

The Florida Panthers have placed forward Matthew Tkachuk on long-term injured reserve, according to multiple reports on Sunday.

TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston adds that Tkachuk's injury could sideline him for the remainder of the regular season.

Interesting.

I don't know what the condition on Florida's first was in the Chi trade but I read that if they don't have a 2026 first it would change to a 2027.

Still possible that they trade their 2026 for more help, keep Tkachuk on LTIR to playoffs and load up even more.

I fail to see how that would be allowed though so maybe I read it wrong

They already traded away their 2026 1st. It just has a condition on it.

Edit: nevermind, I misread the chart I was looking at.

Right.

I can't figure out if they have the option to keep and trade the 2026 pick, therefore turning Chi's pick into a 2027.

They traded their 2025 1st top 10 ten protected for Tkachuk turns into a 2026
From what they saying last night they traded 2026 first rounder unless it isn't available and then it becomes a 2027 1st..

It sounds like they can still use the 2026 1st.

Flames get 2025 1st.

The Flames get Florida's 2025 first-round pick (from the Matthew Tkachuk trade) if (a) Florida's 2024 first-rounder is not top 10 (and goes to Philadelphia in the Claude Giroux trade) AND (b) Florida's 2025 first-round pick is not top 10 (and Florida keeps it). If so, Calgary's 2025 fourth-round pick goes to Florida.

2025 pick was not involved.

Jones pick is 2026 or 2027.

When they traded for Tkachuk if the 2025 pick is top 10, Calgary receives 2026 1st Round Pick so the pick for Jones moves to 2027.
As of today the Flames get Floridas 2025 pick and the Hawks get the 2026 pick.
Florida drops into the top ten this season the Flames get the 2026 1st and the Hawks get the 2027

There are 3 first round picks.
2025, 2026, 2027
involved.

Two of those picks are allocated, so there is 1 first round that can still be used.

So the Panthers can still use 1 of those 3 first round picks. The year to be determined.

Unlikely they are bottom 16 this year.
A team dealing with them knows the pick will likely be 2026 or 2027.

I am not sure who decides?

Can Panthers do a conditional 2025 or 2026 in another trade and Hawks are left with 2027, or Panthers have to do 2025 or 2027?

teams cannot trade away picks that they may need to move as part of a condition in another trade.
So the 2025 could be traded if its conditional top ten but slides to and 2027 if not top 10.
Only way the Hawks dont get the 2026 pick is if the Panthers drop into a top 10 pick.

Panthers have 3 first round picks in next 3 years. They only need 2.

They can trade 1 more. It would be conditional.

I expect it will be included for the player who is acquired using Tkachuk Cap Space.
