His struggles since the turn of the calendar are a big part of the Red Wings issues. I'm personally not sure if he fits the best mold for a man defense. He's got the size and physicality, but if you get him moving his limitations start to get exposed.

Yeah I saw that tweet. Makes a lot of sense because uhhh...

With a game in hand

Who was laughing at me the other day when I said that Mack needs to average 3 PPG for the reminder of the season?

He just had 4 points in the last 2 games and lost ground on both Kuch and McDavid.
Lost ground? A couple weeks ago people were counting Nate out of the race.

Kuch 105
Mack 101
McDavid 97

Compared to now..

Mack 115
Kuch 112
McDavid 106

You’re telling me that giving Seider Chiarot as the best dman to help him out is a bad idea?? Regardless of how Seider is playing, it’s not remotely shocking that this defensive core sucks ass.

It's not a good sign, as JFresh points out, that the GM went out and got four veteran defensemen and the coach appears scared to use them against tough competition. Instead he's using the kid as his top shutdown guy and his numbers have suffered mightily as a result.

The Chiarot signing makes no sense for a guy who's as reportedly analytics-savvy as Yzerman is. Chiarot is nothing more than a third pairing banger with a heavy shot. Yet teams just can't get enough of him because he supposedly had that great run with the Habs in 2021 (he really didn't, Price and Weber made him look a LOT better than he actually was).

I also don't understand the Holl acquisition. And I suppose he all but admitted the Copp signing was a failure when he went out and got Compher. Thing is, Copp is supposed to be better than Compher, but he might have hit ye olde age wall hard.

As for Gostisbehere, that seemed like a worthy, low-risk gamble.

Petry is just plain done.

If there's one strange thing Yzerman does that tends to get him in trouble, it's that when he zeroes in on a player he likes, he ignores all evidence that might dissuade him and pursues that guy non-stop. And yes, I realize all GMs are like this to a certain degree (just look at the Avs and JJ/Drouin) but Yzerman seems to crank it up to 11. His OBSESSION with a washed-up Chris Kunitz literally cost him Martin St. Louis from Tampa and then even after Kunitz was a non-factor in the Olympics, put him on the Bolts roster for his final season. I dunno if Chiarot or any of these other guys was an example of this but it wouldn't surprise me.

Never a good sign though when the GM and coach just aren't on the same page.

In pains me to say this, but I would rather have the Oilers win any series vs. Vegas. Hell, any team but Vegas would be fine. Something about that franchise just is so repulsive no me. Maybe its the gold glitter trim that is the start of my trigger. ;)
The Knights just fully embody everything I dislike about the culture of the city. Everything about them embraces that glitzy, tacky, seedy, shallow, loud, and greedy Las Vegas ethos. They're the perfect hockey team for "Sin City".

I think NSH is being overrated around the league right now. Their 10-0-2 record in their last 12 games look great but the quality of opponent was pretty weak during that stretch. The only strong teams in that stretch were Avs, Jets, Vegas and LA. Vegas and LA have been bad for a while now, Avs were hurt quite a bit when they played us and we are much better since the TDL, and the Jets were missing Vilardi which is a pretty big part of their offense. Don't get me wrong it is still an very good streak but I don't think they are as dangerous as some people are making them to be.

I still prefer playing them in the first round than the Jets or Dallas.

Two spleen issues in the same season. I don't recall that.

For some reason it keeps triggering an old '90s memory, when I used to listen to Dean and Rog on KBPI in the morning and they had the Dean & Rog singers who'd cover rock tunes, but insert different lyrics. Anytime they did a song about the Avs or Broncos they'd throw in a line about rupturing the spleens of the opposition.

Anyway...that was all.

Yzerman has done a shit job building that team but everyone wants to crown him GM of the Year because they are in a Wild Card race and barely over .500 after half a decade at the helm. I don't like what they are doing in Detroit and I'd not be surprised if that team fails and has to restart building again.

If Lucas Raymond is your best forward, your team sucks.

True. It's a joke.

Larkin is the best forward... and Detroit has one of the best farm systems in the league. It is an incomplete picture and this team of mids isn't the vision.

"GM of the Year" is kind of a joke award anyway.

If I had to give it to one though, it'd probably be Bill Zito or Barry Trotz.

I get why people here don't want the Red Wings to emerge from the abyss just yet but I don't know why people are trying to retroactively call Yzerman a terrible GM. He's objectively an excellent GM, Tampa is only just now coming to the end of a run of dominance that any fan here would take in a heartbeat if it happened to the Avs.

He's hitting some pretty hard bumps in trying to get the Wings back on track and he's been surprisingly aggressive in his approach in Detroit but I still don't think he's faceplanted just yet.

If any GM out there has an inflated reputation, IMO it's Ron Francis. I've also been pretty critical of Rob Blake but no need to go into that again.

Watched the tail end of Seattle/Washington (ha). Caps scored the GWG off a bad pass right at the blue line by Burakovsky. Still love that guy but I don't miss that aspect of his game.

Definitely going to miss this playoffs this year. Wonder if Hakstol is in any danger.
