Speaking of Compher, they are now realizing he's not a 2C:

I think the plan always was to have JTC as the fill-in until a more worthy replacement was ready. Whether that’s Kasper or someone else, who knows, but yeah with Larkin down the Wings are f*************ked.

What kinda surprises me is that Yzerman moved on from Copp as that fill-in option as quickly as he did. And Copp technically should have been a better option than Compher. Then again he didn’t play a lot of center in Winnipeg and they had some depth issues up the middle at the time.

So winning your division gives you Vegas or Nashville?:oops:
Bring them on.

Yzerman botched that rebuilt big time.

He sure was in a hurry to sign the likes of Ben Chiarot, JT Compher, David Perron, Patrick Kane, Jeff Petry, Shayne Gostisbehere, Justin Holl and Andrew Copp of this world.

More than half of his team is made of bad UFA signings. What the f*** is that shit?
True. To me the Kane signing never made any sense. Especially for Kane.

Lmao Connor Brown got a standing ovation for his 1st of the season.

The 7th goal in a 7-2 game.
Totally worth the four million they will pay total

In fairness, I think he tried to do it the right way, but he and wings were dealt horrible draft lottery luck (insert thatsAshame.gif). We’re all heartbroken, I know.

But this now turned into one of those scenarios where the organization’s best interest diverges from what’s in the GM’s best personal interest.

As a GM your team has to produce eventually regardless of whether you had bad luck or not. So after 3-4 years of being a bottom 5 team with no end in sight, Yzerman was forced to make moves to save his job that weren’t in the team’s best interest and the team wasn’t ready for.

Now, they’re totally screwed b/c they’re a middling team thats not good enough to go anywhere in the playoffs and too good to get the high picks they truly need. As a result, they’ve now positioned themselves very well to be a bubble team the next 2-3 years before they get the pleasure of having to start their rebuild from scratch! Again, we’re devastated.

Also, while you could (and probably should) say that the ultimate goal in the end is to win Stanley Cups and everything should be centered around that, that's not always the case. There are lot's of other things to consider, like getting people to actually watch. Which can be difficult, if you suck for 10 years straight trying get good picks that actually hit.

It's easy for us armchair GMs to say "just tank until you get good". Not how it works.

Not every team is as "lucky" as Edmonton or Chicago who seemingly get given the #1 overall every time they miss the playoffs.

Successful rebuilds come down to sucking when the right kids are available. Think about how long our rebuild took, the number of resets. We also got pretty lucky with Duchene wanting out. MacFarland really turned lemons into lemon-aide on that one.

Especially considering how poor our drafting has been otherwise, at least our top guys really hit. Like think about getting Rantanen as a #10 pick. That was an insanely deep draft in 2015, and those usually happen like once a decade, or once in 15 years. And then some other drafts you can get the #1 pick, and he might turn out to be a bubble first liner/1st pairing guy.

I dunno, we'll see. Tried to aggressively shore up the support staff but then the core players not named Larkin for whatever reason took a giant step backward in their development. I'm really not sure what in hell happened with both Seider and Raymond but neither has had anywhere near the impact they had their first year.

And much as I despise Kane, I don't think that was a huge mistake either way. There wasn't much risk there. Same with Ghost. I'm sure he'd probably like a redo on Copp (strange the guy gets to play for his hometown team and has just been kinda meh after a career year). The two signings that make absolutely no sense to me whatsoever are Chiarot and Holl. They REALLY don't make sense when you also add in the fact that he dealt away a reasonably good defenseman in Filip Hronek (selected with a pick that originally belonged to the Avs, thank you very much Connor Bleackley) for picks. Like, why?

So far even as aggressive as he's been in free agency, he hasn't really saddled the team with any contracts that'll kill them down the stretch. That could change this summer. He has to decide whether or not to keep a 35-year-old David Perron, and both Raymond and Seider are up for new deals.

Also, he's had no luck whatsoever in finding an interim solution in goal until Cossa is ready (and boy, if he doesn't pan out and Wallstedt does, that'll haunt him for a long, long time). Husso has been a disaster, Lyon gave them all he could but he just isn't a legit starter, and Reimer, well, f*** that guy.

All in all he was handed an absolutely HORRID mess in Detroit, way worse than what he had in Tampa, and so far it's taking a lot longer than he likely anticipated. We'll see if it works out. If it doesn't, meh, I'm not a Red Wings fan.

I still find it funny that two years in a row there the Avs didn't get any lottery luck (but hey they got the best player in 2017 anyway so I'm not really all that unhappy about it), they complained because the new system was f***ing ridiculous, and no one did anything. It ends up screwing the Wings, Yzerman says something, and the league immediately changes it back to the way it was.

Article about spreadsheet nerds I saw on the Oilers board: 'Open people's eyes': How the NHL's evolved in the decade of data

"One of the challenges with hockey in general is that it's a very chaotic sport with lots of substitutions and where the best players play less than half the game," NHL group VP of statistics and information Russell Levine said. "We're hopeful that people can take the sort of information we're presenting and use it to better understand what makes certain players and teams effective."

A few people interviewed for this article wondered if the third-party providers will eventually be able to unearth data insights that can help better separate individual player performance from coaching systems. Others are interested in one day accessing data that can help better quantify hockey sense and hockey IQ.

(The article is more detailed and (slightly) more interesting than this and worth reading)

Does nobody just do anything for pure enjoyment any more? Does everything need to be analysed and quantified from a f***ing screen?

I need someone to explain to me why the Preds only have three more recalls from Milwaukee allotted them post-deadline.

I didn't think building a STL type team was going to go well.. It started a bit before he got there though. Larkin is not ROR..

They've over achieved similar to our first rebuild.

Bro are you serious? Hurricanes vs Panthers, this happened last game.

I don't know why, but I've been having a hard time watching Hurricane games the last year or two. Just haven't been able to get into that team. I still respect the hell out of Rod as a coach, but just don't think they have the star power to go the distance or capture my attention for very long. Florida though is just a bunch of rabid dogs. I said it before but I can't help but think Pat Quinn would approve of the job Paul Maurice is doing in Sunrise.

It's kind of like NYI, for whatever reason, I've never been able to really enjoy watching them play. Although I adore Roy. The Stars and Wild fall into that category in the West for me. I can watch Arizona or even St. Louis for some reason but not Dallas or Minny.
