I'm not even talking the City directly, but how much does the team and NHL make?

Then add what the City makes and ya you're looking real good.
I'm not sure there is much direct financial benefit to the host team. Maybe some spillover to merchandise sales, season tickets, and maybe hosting for local and or national sponsors. International exposure for your brand and market. It's largely a loss leader with event hard costs but a significant marketing vehicle for a secondary league to showcase its product and partners.

I don't think that's a big deal. Being at home in the war room with your entire crew in a quiet room might actually make trades easier.

I won't really miss the "Dubas is talking on two phones! He's a genius. Rumour is he's talking to Jim Rutherford about an unnamed player" talk that they use to fill the dead air haha.
I'm talking more about the broadcast component where yes, we get the pan shot of Dubas with two phones, but viewers are engaged as a fly on the wall observe to discussion on floor. Feels more real time and adds to the energy imo. Will be different with the disconnected war room shots of bored suits in their sterile, aquarium like setting. ;)

Hopefully it'll improve the prospect side of the broadcast. The NFL does a really good job of introducing, breaking down and showing clips of every prospect.

The NHL's "experts" are basically like "Yeah, James, he's *checks notes* from Alberta and he's *checks notes again* a big boy. Great pick by the Oilers." Then cut to eight minutes of watching the prospect walking to the stage and taking a picture with a bunch of dudes you don't know.

Not sure why one would think the NHL would do a good job or get better at something.

We'll get the same sort of coverage we already get in Canada.

They'll have to figure out some way to fill the time that they used to gossip about which GMs were chatting with which GMs out on the floor.

Probably just more sports betting ads, but maybe there's a chance it's better prospect coverage.

They'll just do what they do now and talk about who they think will go next

Sportsnet has been making cuts for years, so I just don't see them spending the money to have someone actually make those meaningful clips. Even though you could get an intern to make you up clips.

Not even sure how much value having insiders would be anymore. Probably better off having more guys geared to the prospects like fired GM's or ex scouts and Sam/Jason

I think like most production issues the Draft has taken a big step back after TSN lost the broadcast rights. Sportsnet in all areas most notably talking heads is a big step down. Add the American networks moving in as partner broadcasters the NHL draft hasn't been that great. NFL is next level quality in all aspects of its broadcast production and business operations.

The new format will be fine. Just remove viewers from a greater sense of participating and anticipation with the feel that what we can see happening around the draft floor might manifest into a trade.

It's funny networks for NFL pay big bucks for the rights, spend tons on production and tons on in game commentating/analysis.

What does Sportsnet do? Spend big bucks for the rights and slash everywhere else.

Kassian retires from NHL after 12 seasons | NHL.com

Had mixed feelings about Zack over his Oilers tenure but I'm not surprised he's retiring. Too often he really didn't seem like he had the correct amount of focus. I know he had some addiction problems and hopefully he didn't fall back into them. Will always remember going to that one game of his that made him a legend:

I liked him as an Oiler, sucked to see him struggle to end his time here.

Seemed like after he had a kid that's when his game just fell apart. Thought maybe that would change after some time, but a player of his skillset just doesn't have time once you get to 30.

Zach was okay that season, but had that one magical game in the San Jose series that threw the fans into a frenzy and tantalized managment. So much so, that he came out with a big fat unrealistic multi year contract shortly after that. It's the way Oilers management works. Same with Nurse. Had that one huge year during Covid against 6 other teams, and piled on the goals and points, especially against sad sack Ottawa, and voila! A massive, overpaid contract shortly thereafter.

Massive kudos to both of their agents for striking hard while the iron was hot.

Kassian also had that brief stretch where was good with McDavid before falling back into old habits.

But yeah, management is easily impressed by small stretches of good play.

I really thought the Oilers were building something special during this playoff run. Watching this just made me sad. Hopefully the start of this season doesn't spell the end of an era.

He licks the Sens nuts lol. Massive homer

Minnesota suddenly not scoring anymore.
Was just about to say

They go to Philly nad are being shutout and the 2nd is almost over. Almost like Philly is playing good D....

And look at Boston. Just rolling along. Imagine we lost two top players like they did? Hell, they lost Hall and Bertuzzi from their playoff run

Almost like good strong work ethic and good structure can win games
