Not surprising at all. I would guess that Cory still has his house in Short Hills, NJ rather than uproot his family and young children. Bridgeport is roughly a 2 hour drive, so if I had to guess he probably has an apartment/hotel there but can also come home quite frequently and/or his family can go see him play. Games are usually on weekends, so during weekdays depending on the practice times, it's probably not that terrible of a commute. He's also from Massachusetts, so friends and family from there can go see him in Bridgeport as well. If/when he does get called up to the big club, he's also still close to home. Win/win situation.
There may have been interest from other clubs, but I would assume in all those cases it's still as a #3. Likely not worth it to barely see his family all season for a slightly higher chance of playing in the NHL again.
At this point I understand playing in Bridgeport, but I think his NHL career could have possibly been extended (slightly, but probably never full time again, unless someone got injured and even then only for the remainder of that season) if he had signed somewhere else in 2020. He signed with Lou and the Islanders just days after we bought him out and free agency began, though it wasn't officially announced until January right before camp started that year. I don't think Lou made any of his signings official until then.
But with how many teams had to use 3, 4, 5 goalies the last two years, there was a greater path for me playing time with almost any other team in the league. And I'm sure other teams would have signed him for the AHL/third string that year. He stayed with the NHL team for almost all of 20-21 (though he did play a few games in Bridheport that year) since everyone was carrying 3 goalies cause of the covid protocols and taxi squads, but outside of quite a few games of sitting on the bench dressed as the backup, his only regular season game was that random start against us last year in the last month of the season.
I'm sure his family is still in New Jersey and he's a guy that I think will end up on NHL Network (and possibly even more than that, perhaps a gig with one of the local teams on MSG?) when he is ready to retire, as he did do some broadcasting a couple of times, including one year during the playoffs and even in 2020 during the playoffs for NBC a couple of times.
I can't knock the guy for still choosing to play though.
