It must be the RD premium. Probably worth a 3rd rounder if he was an LD.

I don't really get why they grab him for a first when they could have brought in the better player in Subban.

Dallas is another team that's filled with a bunch of 34 year olds. They were/are probably gonna be older than the Islanders this year, as long as Lou resists the urges to bring back Greene and Chara or bring in Joe Thornton.

They really could use a guy Lundkvist's age over there in Dallas.

It just always felt weird that there was gonna be another guy with that name on the Rangers, even though they have different spelling.

So we know the Rags and Philly will be picking 1-2 in the draft next year. Who gets 1?
Why would the Rangers be picking first? I thought it was a top-10 protected pick for 2023?

Rags trade Buchnevich for a 3rd/4th line tweener who tears his ACL and a third round pick and it's all "The Rangers are so good at making trades". If Lundkvist is any good and the Stars make the playoffs, this deal sucks for the Rangers.

It's absolutely absurd. He came over to NA and did a complete face plant, and the Rangers probably get a better pick than what they used on him. Christ almighty.

He basically had the same d+3 that Reilly Walsh did, was anyone going to give us a 1st round pick for him? We got absolute f***ing scraps for Ty Smith. Same age, similar terrible year after a great year. It's really f***ing old watching other teams just shine their goddman shoes for them.

I like the Lundkvist trade for Dallas more than most 1st rental trades and no one seems to blink an eye at those. This board wanted to trade late firsts for roster help for years now well this is the market I guess for any cost controlled player with potential. This trade only happens because lundkvist is unhappy too.

I forgot all about that STUPID f***ing Buchnevich for Blais trade. That was awful for the Rangers.

It doesn’t suck, it’s still a 1st, not a 2nd and this draft looks strong. It’s a bit shocking but I don’t have any take on Lundkvist’s viability.

He has two years left on his ELC, unlike Smith, who has one left and he’s RHD. If he can play in the NHL now that’s a cheap defenseman for two years.

No clue what Lundkvist will do in Dallas, but I do wonder if the Rangers are able to sometimes get other teams to give them excess value the same way the Yankees have often done it in baseball: their presence as "but we're in NEW YAWK" often means their prospects and young players get overrated just by sheer exposure.

That said, no, the Rangers don't win every deal they make, and I still have questions about their player development system.

That trade sucked because the Rangers were desperate to add third liners with grit…but when they have to trade failed prospects and get rid of cap hits they usually do make out like bandits.

Instead of looking at one season (and you've identified the wrong season), played in the apparent hellscape of Hartford where nobody wants to ever play, how about looking at Lundkvist's entire career, including his D+3 where he tied for an SHL team lead in goals as a 20 year old defenseman? Beating up on the WHL is one thing, beating up on a men's pro league, at worst the 4th best league in the world, is quite another.

Tying up a pick for 4 years isn't good either.

It doesn't suck in terms of value, it sucks for the Rangers' window. They need to flip this pick or the player taken with it, IMO. Rangers have 3 big declining contracts and Shesterkin only has 3 more years of being this cheap. In 2025-26, the Rangers have $53 million tied up with 7 players, none of whom are Shesterkin. Maybe that's an argument to keep this pick but it's hard to see how the Rangers are significant contenders in 3 years.

Meh. I don't think getting 60th overall for Lias Andersson, 3 years after he was the 7th overall pick, is all that good.

I don't think this is a thing. The Rangers have zero national footprint. This happens with the Leafs, not the Rangers.
