Sharks will listen to trade offers for Karlsson, GM says

The San Jose Sharks will listen if teams inquire about Erik Karlsson before the NHL Trade Deadline on March 3, said general manager Mike Grier, who will discuss any potential deal with the defenseman.

Karlsson has a no-trade clause in the eight-year contract he signed with the Sharks on June 17, 2019.

After this season, Karlsson has four more years and 39 million remaining (11.5 mil cap hit). That's gonna be a tough one to move. Most contenders will either have cap issues and/or already have highly paid RD. Teams who could use Karlsson:

Vancouver: Maybe have the worst RD depth in the league. But Karlsson with Hughes/OEL just seems like a bad mix. I figure Vancouver will overpay for Matt Dumba or Damon Severson in the offseason rather than trade assets for somebody.

Dallas: Probably can't fit Karlsson under the cap but they were interested previously when he was being dangled by Ottawa. They already forked over their 1st for Nils Lundkvist to be a cost effective RD.

Seattle: Maybe could carve out cap space in the offseason. I figured they would have been a prime candidate to sign John Klingberg last summer but they used the money on Schultz+Bjorkstrand instead.

Buffalo: Would be surprised if Karlsson waived his NMC, but the Sabres seem headed in the right direction. Although Karlsson might be too old for their window. Dahlin/Power would both need new deals after next season, so they maybe need to reserve that cap space.

Columbus: Maybe would be more attractive in the offseason? If he survives the season, maybe GM Jarmo Kekalainen would make a short sighted trade to save his job? Something like Jakub Voracek (8.25 cap hit, one year remaining), Adam Boqvist (3x2.6), and a large pizza? Maybe the implicit value for the Sharks would be clearing three years of cap space?

Edit: Elliotte Friedman mentioned that Ottawa may have kicked the tires but the cap hit would be difficult.

That third goal tonight against Markstrom was a Cloutier, just awful. Only seconds after they scored to climb within 1, too. Calgary really has to light it up to win right now, and they were lucky to hang on against the Kings. Tonight was only the Flames 5th road game (1-3-1), they have played 11 at home, and they have a .500 points%.

This was the first game of a 6 game road trip against teams with winning records at home. Not a brutal trip, but no real softies either. If they (and Markstrom) don't pick it up they could dig themselves quite a hole by the quarter mark of the season.

I saw that. seriously, if Kings had play average defense against them , we're 2-0 on this trip.

Doughty, Karlsson

Walker 2.65
Cal 5

With a little retention & a forward thrown in, it's not that far off.

EK has freakin 28 points in 19 games tied with Crysaitle for second in the league in scoring . Say what we want about Erik Karlsson but dude is balling out this year on a lottery team. Crazy.

Yeah he literally doesn't have any reason to bring it every night and he's almost carrying that team.

It's an interesting experiment, probably not a coincidence that they sent him out around the 6 minute mark since there'd be a TV timeout after the next whistle. I don't think it's a bad idea if you're down by a goal and have an offensive zone start.

In this case, Marner changed on around the 6:30 mark after a Toronto dump in and he helped gain a zone entry / scoring chance before Hischier went at him the other way. Realistically not that much different than using 4 forwards on a PP.

Toronto was more depleted than normal on defense yesterday with Brodie out (on top of Muzzin).

I wish I saw a fit with Toronto if they were interested in some of our D to fill in. Bummer, our trades with them have obviously been working out.
