I'm a little bitter that I got autorenewed for full price this summer. Naturally that's on me for forgetting to cancel but I don't think they sent a reminder either.

They don't send a reminder, though at least they do make it easy to cancel.

My original account was restricted from posting in the comments section a couple years ago. I wasn't being aggressive or an a-hole, but I was critical of their coverage. I tried a few times to contact them to find out why that happened and if it was permanent, but there was never any response. I think a good number of users had this happen (or just left) as the amount of critical comments went down quite after that time.

Yeah it was not just beat reporting for sure, thinking of guys like Pronman, Wheeler, Dom, Shayna etc. I don't know maybe they will trim the traditional beat reporting, pluck the best analysts/scouts and make a sustainable business there as a baseball prospectus site.

Kind of feel like Dom will maybe eventually leave and join some sports gambling type site, that's the other possible platform for analytics heavy content, which would suck imo, I hate the gambling ads everywhere, and don't love how this source of joy is being used to get people to put money into a venture with negative expected value, but that's another issue.

Can't stand the gambling ads everywhere. Aside from being a losing proposition, I just wouldn't do it purely out of spite for all those ads.

So maybe everyone else already knew this and I’m just late to the party, but The Athletic is barely publishing any hockey content at all anymore.

In my boredom I went browsing through the pages of each of the teams we played recently looking for a recap I could read, and… nothing. Not even the Canadiens had one up.

Not only that, I noticed the same stories were showing up on each of the teams’ pages. A couple of DGB articles, the Tkachuk/Huberdeau trade story, the revised predictions, and a few more.

How many hockey articles are they even publishing? It doesn’t feel like it can be much more than 4-5 per day across all 32 teams.

I guess it was inevitable since it was another money losing VC startup, and the financiers weren’t going to keep pouring money into it forever, but it’s a sad sight compared to the powerhouse from 3-4 years ago that would publish tons of great stories every day.
I still like the Athletic's content. The national writers (Dom/Shayna/Salvian/Pronman/Wheeler) are worth it for me alone. Plus their football and World Cup coverage is nice.

But yeah, they clearly don't see profitability in having beat writers for each market (I mean, yeah, fair enough I guess). Basically it's just VAN and TOR that have multiple articles per week, as those fanbases are very active with the Athletic.

I don't even mind the type of content the Athletic produces. I'm not the kind of person to read gamers or previews anyway - they're boring and repetitive, and I can get info on the lineup from Twitter/Instagram. I'm in for the more long-form or analytical/video review pieces like the one Shayna did recently. Just wish there were more of them.

At least there is a lot more quality content coming out of the blogosphere now, like Todd Cordell.

It’s so satisfying that HockeyViz’s model finally likes us. It means more when you really have to work for it.

Wedgewood went down and was stretchered off after doing a couple saves in a row.

Wedgewood was around with us the same time as DeBoer right? just noticed they are with the same team now.
Wedgewood was in the minors at the time DeBoer was head coach here. I’m sure he played some preseason games under DeBoer and training camps, but DeBoer was gone for over a year by the time he made his NHL debut.

Jost put on waivers. I remember I wanted him badly in ‘16 and being pissed that Sakic snagged him. Guess that’s what happens when you rush a guy way too early into the league.

Just so I can laugh at myself, I saved my keeper league draft lists which more or less correlate to who I'd want the Devils to take in the first round. In 2016, my top 10: Matthews-Laine-Puljujarvi-Tkachuk-Dubois-Nylander-Keller-Brown-Jost-Sergachev. Although I think I had a tier drop after Keller in the moment.

His 15 points was seven better than any of his teammates. Jost recorded five-point games against Denmark and Switzerland and was named the Player of the Game on two occasions.

One thing that was a little worrisome at least with the expectations for Jost was that he broke Connor McDavid's Team Canada record for points at the U18s right before the draft. McDavid was just finishing up his rookie year in the NHL, so I think some headline readers has inflated expectations for Jost as a result. But he piled up points against the bad teams and didn't do much against the US.

You know, I ripped on M. Tkachuk a lot during the playoffs because of some NJ fans' obsession with him, but gotta give him credit, he's still putting up great numbers and leading that FLA team. Still ultimately think he ages like Corey Perry but it's clear he's genuinely great.
Perry had a 30 goal season at 30 years old, so Tkachuk still has some runway.

It is kind of crazy that Nick Suzuki genuinely might be the best center Montreal has had in three decades. He'll be better than Koivu and you have to go back to Turgeon and Damphousse to find a guy who drives the bus down the middle.

Man, each Canadian franchise is a trip the more you look at the history since the early 90s.
I just looked up Koivus numbers and wow, I thought he put up waaaay more points.

Our franchise would have been relocated if we picked Patrick/Kakko instead of Hischier/Hughes.

I admit I was team Patrick, but I was always team Hughes.

If Team ''Plays against men'' had their way (most of them weren't Devils fans, anyway) we'd be such a joke.

Just imagine if the Rags picked Hughes. That might have been enough to at least push them through the ECF last year.
