I can bet you that Babcocks new salary is not anywhere near the 6.25m a year the Leafs were paying him. Leafs probably told him if he wants a new job he has to give up the rest of the money on the deal (or the new team pay the difference). And tbh, would you rather take 4 years off and make 6.25m sitting at home, or would you rather take probably half the salary and start working again?

Sniff test

Realistically, how much money is Babcock owed in the last month of his contract?

Is Shanahan really that petty and manipulative and controlling that he'd block Babcock from getting a new job right now?

Not to defend Shanny, but perhaps Columbus just refused to cover the money owed for that period. If they offered to pay I doubt the Leafs would block

So do coaches get paid weekly, bi-weekly, monthly?

Is there a coaches association keeping track of contracts?

Is there anything to stop a team from saying they're signing Babcock effective July 1st., that they've agreed in principle to a deal? If they're talking to him then it can't be tampering can it?

If this is making the rounds then it's either false, they have permission, or there's no reason to pretend.

Legitimate question - is CBJ waiting til Babcock's contract expires with the Leafs instead of taking it over as they usually do in these scenarios because it worth far more then they can comfortably afford?

Looks like it, or they just dont want to pay up. I mean at this point its just another month and you dont really need him asap.

But makes you wonder how long cbj has had babcock in their eyes.

The Columbus Blue Jackets are expected to hire Mike Babcock as their next head coach once his contract with Toronto ends on June 30, a team source not yet authorized to speak publicly confirmed to The Athletic on Saturday. TSN’s Darren Dreger was first to report the expected hire. Here’s what you need to know:

• Babcock would replace Brad Larsen, who was fired in April after two losing seasons in Columbus.

• Babcock has not coached in the NHL since 2019, let go by the Maple Leafs after a 9-10-4 start to the 2019-20 season.

• The Blue Jackets finished with the second-worst record in the league last season at 25-48-9.

Backstory

Babcock, 60, owns a 700-418-183 career regular-season record with Anaheim, Detroit and Toronto, a .608 points percentage and a 90-74 record in the playoffs.
He’s reached the Stanley Cup Final three times — once with Anaheim and twice with Detroit — and earned a 2008 Stanley Cup title with the Red Wings, along with two Olympic gold medals (2010 and 2014 with Canada), an IIHF World Championship (2004 with Canada), an IIHF World Junior Championship (1997 with Canada) and a World Cup gold medal (2017 with Canada).

Following Babcock’s firing in 2019, multiple players in Toronto and Detroit went public with allegations of verbal and mental abuse against their former coach. In Feb. 2021, he was hired as a volunteer head coach at the University of Saskatchewan but stepped down from the role last summer.

Columbus missed the playoffs for a third straight year this season, finishing last in the Metropolitan Division. The Blue Jackets hold the No. 3 pick in the 2023 NHL Draft this month.

By the tone of your post it appears as if you're surprised Dubas would make a bad move.

While I'm sitting here wondering how long us fans here at Leaf Nation should wait before we should realistically expect Matt Murray to end in Pittsburgh as Dubas solution to address their goaltending. :wg:

Leafs May Part Ways with Murray in the Off-Season

According to Sportsnet's Luke Fox, the Leafs might consider cutting ties with Matt Murray during the off-season, be it through a trade or a buyout.

This will be the second time the Leafs need to dump a goaltender, as Kyle Dubas' free agent signing Petr Mrazek was another terrible decision.

Murray could be traded or even be bought out at a reasonable price.

The Leafs had Petr Mrazek on their roster for just one season before trading down in the draft and shipping him off to Chicago. Murray could potentially face a similar fate, especially given the substantial pay increase Ilya Samsonov is anticipated to receive.

The real question is, will Kyle Dubas be able to fix his foolish offseason move?
As GM of another team? How would that work?

Don't think it makes sense from financial pov for CBJ to rush signing babcock. Its not like he can start coaching immediately anyway until the new season opens.

if i was in CBJ's shoes I wouldn't be in a rush for it. Why pay extra for babcock when you can have him after June 30th anyway without having to pay extra money

The Dubas crowd told me he would never coach again in the NHL again.

On a more serious note, this will be good for them. He'll bring some much needed accountability and respect to that franchise.

Babcock is a good coach. The handful of people that spoke out against him doesn't imply that everyone he ever coached was sour towards him as if babcock is some sith lord.

hell in dubas' 1st year as GM they had Auston mooning a security guard in arizona.

Lou and Babcock were building a culture of accountability with growing pains that would have brought in mental toughness IMO instead of what they ended up becoming.

Can't cry over spilled milk now but IMO we would have had a lot more success had Lou remained the GM and Babcock the coach with the Leafs.

Gaudreau's morning was likely ruined lol. Getting away from Sutter asap and signing in a quite market just for this to happen.

Will probably be one of the most entertaining storylines of next season, if Babs manages to win back his reputation or just fizzles out.

I do wish NHL GMs would eventually learn there's more coaches out there than the same 30-35 recycled names

I think it's better if CBJ don't have him as coach before the draft anyways. He will stick his nose in there and ask them to get guys who will be good at feeding their families and mowing the lawn.

He usually does well with teams that are under achieving but not so well with putting a talented team over the top. He should have won many more cups with the Detroit team IMO. Also, if Marner refuses to waive his NMC or give a reasonable list before July 1st...threaten to send him to CBJ just for shits and giggles. Who has the hammer now Paul?

Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen declined to confirm or deny the reports about Babcock and didn’t offer new information on the search for Brad Larsen's replacement.

“We’re still doing our due diligence and we’ll get to it when the time’s right,” Kekalainen said. “Unfortunately, I can’t say anything more.”

Kekalainen was asked whether "due diligence" means he and the front office were still sorting through options with multiple candidates.

“There’s all kinds of due diligence,” he said. “I can’t say anything more and we’re still in the process.”

..................

Kekalainen said it’s not vital to have a coach in place before the NHL draft, which will be held June 27-28. The opening of free agency July 1 carries more importance for having a coach, especially while speaking with players to sell them on a team's roster and future.

“We want to do this as soon as it’s possible,” Kekalainen said of naming a hire. “(Ultimately), it’s important to have a coach in place for training camp.”

Kekalainen has final say on which coach is picked, but he’s consulting with the rest of the front office and the team’s player leadership group. Players have already been consulted on one or more candidates, but it’s unknown whether Babcock was one of them.

“I respect their opinion, because they are our leaders for a reason,” Kekalainen said. “We always listen to them and respect their opinion, but at the end of the day, we may not always agree. Most of the time we do and then I make the decision.”

The Blue Jackets are also looking for a new goaltending coach, which might not be resolved until a new head coach is named and consulted.
