They've always struggled with attendance though. Their best years attendance wise were the years Gretzky coached the team.
True, but if you can model the Braves stadium and surrounding area you have a fighting chance.

I put Atlanta teams just below Montreal in terms of teams I dislike, but if I was a youngan’ in Atl Id live up there.

Or maybe putting a team in Arizona is the wrong move from the beginning. And now the League is doubling and tripling down while making the local people the villains for not using their tax dollars for a stadium. IF the owners and team can't afford to build a stadium, they really should not be there in the first place.

Phoenix is a huge market and putting a team there makes perfect sense. In the US tax payers build stadiums for NFL and MLB so why not an nhl team.
It wasn’t only an NHL arena it was multipurpose facility and entertainment district.

I haven’t followed closely, but I think the biggest hurdle was cleaning up a landfill and then building the facilities without the approval of the unions.

The diff would be fans. NFL and MLB are American Sports which American loves. Hockey is not.

Has the NHL ever fought this hard before to try and keep a franchise somewhere?
When it came to moving Canadian teams to the US, no. And not really for cross-US moves, either.

Yes, Phoenix is a huge market. But at the same time, it's the wrong market for this sport; hockey is a winter sport, and Arizona is mostly desert.

as is Vegas…..

Exactly. The nhl doesn’t compete with those sports.

HS football and baseball is part of our culture, it’s a part of almost every community in the country.

as is Vegas…..

Vegas is TBD, even if they win the Cup this year. Bc 10 yrs down the line, they might face the same problems as Arizona. Vegas's advantage is the Stadium is on the strip and right next to MGM(I think thats the hotel), plus they can always partner up with hotels to do package deals for tickets.

Vegas is not a typical American city.
