Yes we can if they can win a Stanley Cup

Kane got this contract and terms after the winning few cups.

I believe the soonest they can sign a new contract is July 1st., correct?

July 1st. the NTC/NMC clauses kick in.

So if you knew it would take Matthews as long as it took Ovechkin to win a Cup would you trade Matthews to change the make-up of the team, or be satisfied with having a good non-winner for a decade?

I'm with you here, but the underlying question is what do you do if they don't win Stanley Cup this year?

If you don't sign them now you can find yourself in the Kane situation minus Cup. If you are trading Matthews, we have one try...

This is the additional cost of our contract, you can pretend term and NMC/NTC don't matter only for so long.

We sign him, our cap situation is even better. We lose him, we closed our window before Bergeron and Krejci managed to fall off the cliff..

I would say of you trade Matthews you can never replace him, so it would be the equivalent of getting oh so close, and then needlessly blowing it up for no reason. I take however long it takes with Matthews, because I believe they Leafs won't be able to win it without him.

Every team that has ever won the Cup did it without Matthews.

Every Leaf Cup was won without Matthews.

But, you might be saying this version of the Leafs, even if you replaced Matthews with McDavid can't win the Cup.

To this point we can't be impressed with the Matthews lead Leafs once the playoffs begin, but perhaps as veterans they'll do better.

Edit: As a Leafs fan, this time of year is always one of hope and dreams. Regardless of how crappy or good the team is. Common Trades.
 
I hate the playoff format as much as the next person it needs something major done. Going back to the old(er) days it is actually exactly the same, still Toronto vs TB.

Here's a typical conversation I have IRL, twitter, HF etc

Them: We need to go back to 1 vs 8 like before Toronto vs TB in round one isn't fair
Me: The East would actually be the same it doesn't make a difference
Them: ......
Me: We need to make it full NHL 1 v 16, that's the only fair way.
Them: NO!, time zones, travel, 4pm and 10 pm start time, can't do it
Me: Really? These professional athletes on private jets and fans with PVRs and online streams it's really that huge of a hardship?

I just can't stand the people who won't shut up about going back to Conference 1 v 8 but claim 1 v 16 is the worst idea ever after I point out the East is actually the same.

It's absolutely insane what Holland (is not doing). He's got the best hockey player in the world, whose good enough to almost carry a team on his back, and literally the only threatening team in the entire West is the Avs and they've been dealing with injuries. The man should be dealing everything that's remotely tied down to get a better supporting cast.

At this rate he's going to get Kerfoot or Engvall as his main consolation prize. And maybe some crappy 4th liner from Detroit or something

This is true .. lots of pick to leverage and some prospects that could be paired with some cap dumps for players that come with retention.

A big nothingburger so far there.
