It's nice he can dominate the first couple rounds against weak opponents but it's time to step up here

Matthews would rightfully be criticized if he did this poorly in the finals. Mack shouldn't have a free pass

Matthews can't even get himself out of round one and score in "key moments" there.

Like in game-deciding games, where he vanishes consistently...

Boston, Columbus, Montreal (for multiple games), Tampa (for multiple games)...

1st round / play-in round!!

Not the finals.

Don't even discuss what he might do there because he can't even perform in the FIRST ROUND / PLAY IN ROUND!!

The fact you throw TB or CBJ in there is laughable, Matthews carried the team to the biggest comeback in franchise history against CBJ. I agree on MON for sure, BOS in 2018 he sucked and 2019 he did just alright (though he actually scored in big moments in this series, the 1-0 goal in game 5 and the goal to cut it to 3-2 in game 6)

The point is very simple, but you seem to miss it. Toronto stars are rightfully called out when they underperform. Other markets don't experience it to the same extent. Mackinnon has not been good enough, who gives a shit if he lights up someone like Nashville for 10 points if he isn't doing well when it matters most against elite competition

When you "light a team up for 10 points", that almost certainly paves the way for a series win.

Matthews should try it one of these years while he's still under contract, and Toronto might pop their 1st round cherry.

Even against someone like Montreal or Columbus (your Nashville equivalents) in a play-in series.

Just one time, maybe see how it goes?!

Then maybe lets start talking about Nathan Mackinnon who's a game away from winning the Cup.

Who are you arguing with. The whole argument of that poster is that Matters IS criticized and that Mack should be too if he isn’t playing well.

It’s the final. He was competing.
AM34 might be one of the few Leafs that even want to do what it takes to play in this game.

That's great, he does amazing in the beginning rounds which is more than Matthews. No one can deny that lol

But he's struggling right now and needs to step up. To act like he shouldn't be rightfully criticized for his performance is ridiculous. Mackinnon isn't good enough right now, and if he was wearing a Leaf everyone would hear about it

You're speaking from the standpoint of a Leafs fan who's never witnessed the team escape the first round.

Yes if MacKinnon was a Leaf who couldn't close a first round for six consecutive years, he would be criticized.

But he's not, you're thinking of Matthews since that's all you seem to know, and he's one game away from winning the game's ultimate prize and you're here saying "do better!"

They're a game away not because of him, but in spite of his struggles. Just like Toronto was up 3-2 against MTL last year in spite of Matthews sucking (you're probably going to try to use this as a "LOL LEAF fan comparing round 1 to round 4" when that's not the point btw)

It's really not that difficult to understand here lol. Mackinnon is an all world talent and needs to produce. His missed chance on the breakaway against Vasi tonight was the difference. He should be criticized for this as other players would be. His only goal in the finals bounced off his skate. That's not enough for a top 5 player in hockey.

Absolutely you compare round 1 to round 4.

Matthews hasn't lead the Leafs past the first round and sports a 75 point / 82 game pace, MacKinnon is in the Finals with his usual PPG++ playoff numbers.

MacKinnon has got them through three rounds this year alone, which by my count, is three more than Matthews has ever done, and you're here saying "do better".

It's actually incredible this is a discussion.

Highest of standards for Cup Finalists, lowest of standards for the First Round Chokers.

If only you held Matthews to the incredible standards you hold Nathan MacKinnon, Cup Finalist, to.

It's all just sour grapes to me.

I'm done replying after this because you either don't comprehend what I'm saying or are purposefully being obtuse. The point of that comparison had nothing to do with the round in which it is taking place. It was to show that teams can be doing well in spite of their top player struggling.....I can use another player/team outside of Matthews/Leafs and the argument is the same. The Avs are not 1 game away from the cup because Mack is doing well, it's because the likes of Nuke/Kadri/Rantanen/Makar have stepped up in the finals. If they want that 4th win they'll likely need their best forward to produce like it

And yes, Mackinnon needs to do better lol. You think just because he's in the finals he's now immune to criticism or something? The job isn't done. If Matthews carried us past TB but sucked against Florida I would criticize him as well.

At the end of the day everyone is all the same, no matter how much the main boards want to act like Leaf fans are some unique specimen of fans

Avs fans got their PTSD kicking in, they're understandably worried about what's coming and blowing a big opportunity. Game 6 in TB is a tough, tough challenge

To be fair it is the cup finals and they are 1 win away from winning it all. If we ever make it to that point I'm sure we'll be a little crazy in here too, especially since we haven't won it in so long.
