Matthews can't even get himself out of round one and score in "key moments" there.

Like in game-deciding games, where he vanishes consistently...

Boston, Columbus, Montreal (for multiple games), Tampa (for multiple games)...

1st round / play-in round!!

Not the finals.

Don't even discuss what he might do there because he can't even perform in the FIRST ROUND / PLAY IN ROUND!!
Dude go cheer another team..Matthews says f u

Absolutely you compare round 1 to round 4.

Matthews hasn't lead the Leafs past the first round and sports a 75 point / 82 game pace, MacKinnon is in the Finals with his usual PPG++ playoff numbers.

MacKinnon has got them through three rounds this year alone, which by my count, is three more than Matthews has ever done, and you're here saying "do better".

It's actually incredible this is a discussion.

Highest of standards for Cup Finalists, lowest of standards for the First Round Chokers.

If only you held Matthews to the incredible standards you hold Nathan MacKinnon, Cup Finalist, to.

It's all just sour grapes to me.

Colorado is the perfect example of why you don't give up on an elite core despite consistent playoffs failures.

Career point-per-game++ player in the playoffs..

*Checks Matthews playoff career numbers*

Yikes.

Yeah...maybe that's why we haven't won a single round yet...

You probably shouldn't have said that and made me check that...
Well it's fair to say that we should have won even one round up to this point, but talking about invidual stats. During Matthews era we have played President's Trophy winning primetime Capitals, twice Boston Bruins with 5x Selke winning Bergeron and which once went into finals, all-out defensive team in Blue Jackets, trapping Habs with Price and Tampa Bay after two cup wins + finalist this year.

Those series aren't some high octane coast-to-coast 2ppg series, where your stars pad their stats.

lets trade Mathew and Manner for multiple first and second round draft pick and young promising players , start the rebuild again, since these start player are failure comes playoff time.

I always said this about the Edmonton Oilers when Dave Tippett was there, and they ran their team like an NBA star driven team with McDrai and very little else. Even though they had some okay pieces.

I think our Leaf problem in 2021-22, if there is a problem, is the fact that we don't get a ton of impact from lower in the standings when it matters. Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Rielly and even Nylander having a poor-ish series vs Tampa, Campbell in net, they all gave us a plausible road to victory.

Only problem is we seem like a top heavy NBA driven team that needs Kawhi heroics to win. But you look at Tampa, and it was Nick Paul who won them the series. Colorado avoided disaster vs St. Louis because Darren Helm scored. We won series back in the day in OT on goals from guys like Garry Valk and Nikolai Borschevsky. I'm not sure if it's a personnel issue, but we just haven't gotten that lower line up depth contribution for whatever reason.

Palat continues to deliver in key moments.

Too bad this "around the league" thread has turned into yet another whining about the Leafs thread. Come on guys, don't we have enough of those already?

Anyhow, great final series. I'm happy TB won last night because that means more great hockey to watch for me. :)

Was TB really 0 for 16 on the PP until they finally scored last night? Just wow? Turns out we're not the only team who's PP can go into an extended slump. And people might want to keep in mind that every goalie lets in bad goals now and then (hi Darcy).

After two games I didn't think TB could come back but I was wrong, this team can still win it all. What a team!

Yeah, I thought for the first time the Avalanche looked vulnerable in the 3rd. period.

They looked like their legs were getting heavy.

Even in the previous games and the game the Lightning won, it was a blow out but it seemed like a blow out because Tampa made their chances count.

Last night Tampa seemed to play their game, and deserved the win. Even the 2 goals seemed fortunate for them (Avs). The one goal Vasilevskiy flubbed, almost an own goal.

It would be amazing to win for it to go 7.

I thought he was great. He and Marner were the two best players as it should be. Obviously not enough though.
But couldn’t get the job done, when it came to the crunch.:thumbd:

What?

9 points in 7 games this year? 55% in the dot, lead the team in hits.

Are you even watching these games?
Forget the numbers bud, bottom line is,they didnt, couldn’t get the job done.
AGAIN :thumbd:

Game 5 gwg goal was all Matthews
Game 7 goal was the beautiful touch pass by Matthews
Game 2 he created the turnover and desperation dive to touch pass the goal that cut the lead to 2-1.
Game 2 he scored the pp goal that put Toronto up by 2.

Matthews carried the team on his back. Tampa is too good a team for one player to beat. If Marner, Tavares and Nylander played with Matthews physicality and work ethic then we take that series handedly. Marner rode Matthews coat tails the entire series, while avoiding physical territory.

Now do last year vs Montreal.

I thought it was obvious I’m looking at the overall body of work and not just this particular year’s first round exit.

Honing in just that series would be a classic case of recency bias..

Yeah, Vasilevskiy can shut a team down, but not even getting a shot on net?
The goalie doesn't have to shut you down if you don't shoot.
Leafs outshot Tampa in Game 7 and over the series overall.

Shots were 17-1 when Marner was on the ice in game 7, and 18-3 when Matthews was on the ice in game 7.

Hey now. Clearly, Mackinnon's job is done. He scored some points against Nashville and St Louis' backups.

:sarcasm:
Mackinnon >> Matthews in the playoffs

Korpisalo took Matthews and the big 3 along with our 11M 3C to school and he's avg 1B goalie

Mackinnon is one of the best playoff performers of this generation. Worse than Crosby, Kucherov and a few others (also McDavid as he keeps winning series) but he's certainly better than AM34 whose working on becoming a playoff superstar still

To be fair it is the cup finals and they are 1 win away from winning it all. If we ever make it to that point I'm sure we'll be a little crazy in here too, especially since we haven't won it in so long.

I would be losing my shit no doubt

I am still pissed at Marner for that stupid turnover in Game 6 and then doing absolutely nothing in game 7 LOL

Coming off a weird 5 month mid-season break, Matthews had 6 points in 5 games against Columbus during the best stretch of Korpisalo's career when he was putting up the all-time playoff save record against a dynasty team, for the record.

Getting into the goalies and quality of goaltending that each has faced certainly doesn't help Mackinnon.
