Nepotism is bad, period. You're normally very reasonable but this time it feels like you're really trying to label the majority of people when it likely only applies to a small minority on this board. You talk about it being weird but from my vantage point you're the one who's essentially beating a non-existant horse, as far as this board is concerned, which is even weirder.

Does she get a bit more attention becuase she's the first female broadcaster, definitely, but is it any worse than what Mcquire or Doc get for being nerds, or worse than what old broadcasters endure just for being old? Doesn't seem to be to me, at least on these boards. I'm not active on social media and I'm sure the dregs are being very loud.

Anyway's, I'm more annoyed at ESPN for putting Leah in a position to fail. There has to be better female options than her and I've generally liked most of the females I've heard do color and intermissions.
The only reason I brought it up again was because the abuse she's endured became a national story just a couple days ago. It wasn't out of the blue.

I don't think it's unreasonable to say that women enjoy a much narrower road to acceptance than men. I do think it's important to recognize when reactions become so over the top that it becomes necessary to ask why something so trivial became almost as important and talked about as what was going on in the game.

It was way beyond criticism, and the context of the abuse she went through further showed how weird that reaction on this board was.

Her being ABUSED on the internet is, as I said, beyond the pale. It’s disgusting.

Her being criticized, as a bad announcer…is something that happens to Ahlers and Hazy in 100% of Ducks GDT’s, and they’re considerably better at the job. Multiple posters regard them as “the worst announcers in the league” and discuss how they like to watch the opposing team’s feeds.

i know not everyone thinks she’s “bad”, not should they have to, but I’ve literally never heard anyone says she’s “good”. Looking at her Wikipedia page, she had no experience calling anything but low level leagues before she got the ESPN job. She (and also like I’ve said, 100% of the ESPN crew) needed seasoning at a lower level than the National broadcast -AHL or a local team affiliate. I honestly cannot think of any other broadcasters who didn’t have that on any channels that did national broadcasts - studio shows and juniors/college games don’t make you qualified to call the speed of an NHL game, where the players change every night.

This is an entertainment industry. People complain when the people in charge of entertaining you make decisions that detract from that entertainment. It’s criminal that she has to take bigoted abuse on top of that abuse, but there are PLENTY of robust conversations on HF about which team has the worst announcers, and she absolutely should not get a waiver on that because of her sex, or because of the bigotry.

It should not need to be stated that anyone bringing that abuse to the conversation is going to get infracted.

I feel like we can give her a bit of a pass due to how hard it is for women to break into what she's doing. Also, there are people in this thread who every second comment in GDTs was about her announcing which is obnoxious at the very best.

The problem here is that when the trailblazers aren't good, it makes it harder for those following to get the same opportunities. It feeds the idiots who don't like someone due to their race or sex and reinforces their bigotry.

I bet if you pointed out the ones who were commenting incessantly about how bad she is it would probably be the people who comment incessantly about anything that pops into their head. Some people just like to hear themselves talk(watch themselves write?)

Yeah, speaking as a woman here, we do not need an undercurrent of 'well you can't expect women to be good at the job', which is where the logic of giving passes eventually winds up. If it's true that women can't get broadcasting experience at lower levels, that's a problem that needs to be solved at lower levels. You can't fix it with "hey ladies, if you have a famous hockey name, you too can be thrown to the wolves on a national stage that you were woefully underqualified for!" Maybe a really good trailblazer helps there, but that's not what we have. Nobody's out here wanting to hire the next Leah Hextall, and frankly, it's hard to imagine much of anyone wanting to become the next Leah Hextall. The whole narrative has become yeah, she's not good, but look at all this vile sexist abuse she's getting! That's not how you encourage more women to get involved in the field.

The abuse was as predictable as it is disgusting, and she never should've been put in that position. ESPN had a responsibility to do this correctly and they very much did not.

The problem for me I suppose is I didn't think she was bad, I thought she was just something different to get used to.

As a general rule, this is probably true.

I think it gets exacerbated because when one person complains about it, others pile on because they agree. So, to the people that don't agree, it probably sticks out more. Which, in turn, bothers/annoys them. Then we start getting people complaining about the complainers, and down the rabbit hole we go.

Stutzle gets 8 x $8.35 after his ELC expires.

What does that mean for Z if he hits 60+ points this season? 8 x $9.5?

Probably 9 if they wait. Better sign him asap and for as long as possible before he goes home to NY... his dad still wears Ranger jerseys even to the Honda Center :laugh::laugh:

Ahlers probably does it a little more than most, but getting names wrong isn’t that uncommon for pxp guys, especially if they are with the other team. I think what might separate Ahlers a bit is he gets our guys wrong. But overall he and Hazy are a very good team IMO, with Hazy being better individually than Ahlers

As weird as it sounds I really like Ahlers voice, but I don’t think he does it a little more.
It’s unreal how often he does it. When I watch other broadcasts, it’s rare and if it happens, it’s never the home team. Ahlers is just oblivious to who’s on the ice for both teams. I think Hazy is very good personally but I’d happily see Ahlers leave.

A retroactive cap hit. This league man...

That’s bullshit. The league is always letting teams away with shit like that.
Yup. Every time I hear someone say a team can't do this or that because they're up against the cap the same thought always enters my mind - This is the NHL, of course they can. It's becoming less hyperbolic by the day.

I remember when they docked a 1st from NJ for the Kovalchuk contract and then just handed it back to them the year before the draft. Then there was the Mike Richards fiasco….

It is hard to take the NHL "rules" seriously when they keep doing things like this. At the very least the resolution should be split over the remaining years of the contract.

A lot of people decided to retire this morning....

Seems like more teams going color....
